John Updike, the Pulitzer Prize and National Medal of
Arts-winning writer, died yesterday at the age of 76 from lung
cancer. Although there are many who think his Rabbit series is
his best work (and two of them were in fact the ones he won his
Pulitzers for), I always found him more palatable and most
thought-provoking in short story form. I remember reading A&P
in high school English and being impressed with the mental
pictures he could paint; since that is my best memory of Updike,
that's the symbol I've chosen to commemorate his work. As I'm
sure Mr. Updike would observe, the Rabbit has Rested.
