Which old interface? (zaibatsu.circumlunar.space), 04/05/2020
-------------------------------------------------------------
I love breaking out old machines and booting them up- or, if I don't
have the time/patience/space for that, I love firing up old operating
systems in VM's or emulators. This week, I was playing with DOS, in
dosbox, virtualbox, and on an old Compaq luggable (with the orange gas
plasma display.)

One thing I was fiddling with was old gui environments. I have setups
for Windows 3.1, Windows 2.03, Windows 98, and OpenGEM. I also worked
out Seal and Breadbox Ensemble, just to have them running.

Ensemble was interesting, in that it's not just a gui launcher for
DOS programs, but a complete "operating environment" with apps,
games, internet (which I did nothing with), and an office suite.

While I still prefer the command line in DOS, and text-based
applications for the most part, it's easy to see why most users were
drawn in by the gui's, and it's easy enough to see why Windows won the
gui environment war on that platform.

So, what old interfaces do you love?
