Standard management trick.  I dealt with this in a bad company.

Manager: I need you to stay late today (as I'm just about to leave).
Me: I can't.  I have an appointment.
Manager: Oh, what's the appointment?

What he's trying to do is get to the point where he can argue that what he
needs me to do is more important than my appointment.

Dale is doing the same thing.  He wants to move the argument away from
gun rights to an argument over "what does anyone need a gun for?"
