2023-02-03 Ubuntu So, I got my hands a new old-laptop - a very slim Vaio from 2013 - and got the crazy idea to run vanilla Ubuntu on it. Yes, that Ubuntu with the Gnome-Desktop and the forced snaps. Up to now I used MX-Linux with i3 as the window manager. But since I'm nowadays mostly living in Emacs I think I don't really need a tiling WM anymore. I always want to stay open-minded so I gave Ubuntu 22.04 a try and I have to say my first impression was really good. It looks and sounds fantastic! I know there is much e-drama about the whole snap situation but I wanted to try it myself not mindlessly adopting the viewpoint of some rando from the internet. Now I use Firefox and Emacs28 as snap-packages and so far no problems at all. There are some minor annoyances here and there but most of it stems from my unfamiliarity with this whole Gnome-way of doing things. It really is kinda nice to have functioning, beautiful GNU/Linux system out-of-the-box. I think I keep it for now.
