the modern zeitgeist
I heard on the radio recently that Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue
is a century old now. OK so what was life like back then?
Harold Lloyd... Felix the Cat... television probably existed in a
lab.
Motion pictures: Metropolis and Nosferatu were some of the better
ones.
Telephones, electric lights, record players, hoovers, cameras,
washing machines, central heating and cars 'existed'
but very few people 'had' them. In America but my country was
much poorer. I think electric typewriters existed by then.
A bicycle with pneumatic tyres and one gear
was a desirable machine.
There was no space junk. Plastics were in their infancy. Radio was
too. Lindbergh made his flight.
I suppose people mostly wore wool suits in
various states of repair. If you were handy with
a needle and thread you could darn them, not so common now...
Junk food wasn't a thing.
Avant garde art movements flourished including surrealisme.
Piet Mondrian was another example.
The 1920s buildings were elegant and the streamlined
deco style was all the go. Skyscrapers soared.
That's my own take on the roaring 20s. It was a
creative time and a respite from war. They couldn't keep it
going though. / / / iolfree
