I just came back from watching the new movie based on Dungeons &
Dragons: Honour Among Thieves. The two older D&D-based movies (from
2000 and 2005) were disasters, but as a decades-long player of D&D, I
figured I had to see whether they finally pulled it off. I consider
D&D to be a poor starting point for a film. The D&D rules don't add
anything, and the established campaign settings aren't really all that
good compared to other fictional universes.

However, this new movie is actually pretty well made. What I think
they attempted (succesfully!) is to follow the *storytelling feeling*
of a D&D campaign - the somewhat convoluted story, the goose chases,
the sanctimonious NPCs, the banter, the incompetent players - and put
it into what is essentially a heist movie. Sure, it's fun to see
Szass Tam on the big screen and recognise the various monsters and
spells, but I primarily enjoyed that the overall plot and feel wasn't
too far off from what I experience at the gaming table.
