I just finished reading the comic series PLANETARY. It was amazing!
Ostensibly about archaeologists in a superpowered world; I'd say the
way they go about their business makes Indiana Jones look like an
orthodox scholar. What Planetary is *really* about is a sort of
retelling of 20th century superheroes, conspiracy theories, and
technobabble through a combination of flashbacks, retrospectives and,
well, digging for ruins in the ground.

With the exception of the main trio of protagonists, most of the other
characters are pastiches of classic 20th century heroes. The main
antagonists, for example, are a twisted version of the Fantastic Four,
and the entire Justice League makes an appearance too. I enjoyed
guessing which classic hero each new character was supposed to
imitate, but I can't say I caught all of them (especially the pulp
heroes are a bit obscure for me).

The plot and writing by Warren Ellis is solid at worst and very good
at best. Some of the characters behave a bit too much like witty
teenagers at times (despite several of them being near century-old
immortals), but I think that's just par for the course for comic
books. The art by John Cassaday is fundamentally naturalistic, but
quite psychedelic when the situation calls for it.

Planetary is a single finished story, comprising 27 issues plus a
small handful of crossovers. You can get all of it in a single volume
as the PLANETARY OMNIBUS, and I think you should do so.
