Denmark has been a member of the EU, but with reservations regarding
certain elements of the union. Today I voted in a national referendum
to lift the reservation regarding military cooperation. I think I was
partly driven by simplicity: Denmark is not a neutral country and is
an active participant in NATO. The reservation meant that things
became awkward when overall command of operations transferred between
NATO and EU commands. It is a valid and sensible opinion to be
against any kind of military entanglements, but I think it is
inelegant to express such opposition by throwing a bureaucratic wrench
into the machinery of some kinds of cooperation - especially since
NATO through the US is responsible for more morally dubious operations
than the EU. If we want Denmark to be neutral (which I don't, for the
record) we should do it properly.
