ecliptik [1] had phlogged about the RetroChallenge 2024 (RC2024)
[2] last month and it sounded similar to the Old Computer Challenge
(OCC) [3] in gopherspace, so I decided to give it a go. It looks
like RetroChallenge primarily existed on the surface web [4], but
it looks like they have also created a gopherhole at SDF.
Welcome to the Internet Gopher Club Underground Syndicate,
retrochallenge!
This is my first year participating in RetroChallenge, but I have
participated in other events like this in the past. For RC2024, I
will be continuing my explorations of SunOS, Solaris, and Sun
Microsystems hardware, namely, the Sun Ultra 10 workstation and the
Sun Netra X1 server. Some of you might remember the Sun Ultra 10
from OCC 2023, which I worked on explicitly for a whole week.
Regrettably, I have not done anything with it ever since due to
life getting in the way of my personal computing. When I saw
ecliptik's phost, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to
continue the exploration I had done from OCC 2023, except in
RC2024, I get a whole month to dabble instead of a week.
Day 1: prep work
Reviewed Ultra 10 notes from OCC 2023
Brainstorming ideas to add to the challenge
Day 2: m0ar prep work
Revisitng the NVRAM battery issue.
- NVRAM battery died in the Ultra 10 and I still have not replaced
- Options:
1. Order new battery
2. Do rotary tool hax0rz job
3. Invoke the Incantation of HostID from the ether.[5]
Physical desk setup for the hardwarez.
- Computer desk from OCC 2023 is being used again.
- UPS will be used again as well.
