About Undertow

Undertow is a two-piece instrumental, jazz group based in Chicago.
The group currently consists of Josh Beatty on tenor, alto, and
soprano saxophones, and alto clarinet; and Michael Baker on
electric bass and piano/keyboards.

Josh has a Bachelor of Musical Arts from Pacific Lutheran
University and studied with Ken Vandermark and Bert Wilson.
Michael studied double bass with Michael Heart (Indianapolis
Symphony Orchestra), guitar with David Parman (John Mellencamp),
and classical guitar with Michael Howell (student of Pepe Romero),
and melded this training into his own style of playing the
electric bass. Josh and Michael have individually played with such
groups as Microcosmic Sound Orchestra, the Beatty/Featherstone
Duo, Beatty/Poretti, B/F/M, the Soul Papas, the Bleeding Turnips,
Anarchy, and the Viaducts.

Over the band's career, Undertow has played numerous venues in
Chicago, recorded an album, recorded music for film, recorded
music for social justice projects, and hosted an improvised music
jam session, originally started by David Boykin, Nicole Mitchell,
and Mike Reed.
