March Madness

I'm making picks in a bracket for the NCAA Men's Basketball
Tournament. A sports-obsessed co-worker has created a March Madness
pool and I'm entering it. The bracket that I'm filling out is hosted
on Yahoo! Fantasy Sports. It's all automated and it's a wonder of
JavaScript programming.

My co-worker who runs the tournament and I are old enough to remember
the before-times, when entering 64 teams, into a 4x4 bracket of 16
teams each (each bracket containing 15 games) was a paper-and-pencil
endeavor. Once when I ran a pool I had downloaded software to help me
manage the incoming brackets. It was a different time back then (the
mid-1990s).

My Final Four are the top seeds: Gonzaga beating Baylor, then Arizona
beating Kansas. Pretty safe Final Four. I picked Gonzaga to win it all.
However, all the fun is in the early rounds, picking the upsets and the
close matchups. This year, I have sentimental favorites: UVM (my daughter
goes to school there) and Virginia Tech (my cousin went there). It'll be a
fun March!
