[ Getting re-adjusted

Thanks to the person who provided me with a backup of the entry I accidentally
overwrote. I transcribed it and reposted it.

It got me to thinking of our trip. We've been back only a week, but the whole
vacation now seems like it was so long ago and so short, and that's sad. I have
a ton of photos and lots of video, but it's not the same as being there.

This weekend I got behind the wheel again and it took some getting used to. No
one honking their horn at me and no cars out there with parts taped on or
lights not working. Everyone driving the speed limit and letting other people
in and so on.

I did accidentally flip on the wipers instead of the turn signal (I did that in
the US, too, actually) and I also managed to drive down the wrong side of the
road at one point, but lucikly it was only briefly on a small street with no
traffic.

In the few shops we visited here I found people actually smiling and being nice
and making eye contact.

It's not in the low 70s fahrenheit here, unfortunately, though it's better than
before we left. Typhoon 10 made land fall recently and created a lot of trouble
in the west, and now it appears to be sticking around central Japan doing
damage there. We still have to keep the A/C on because it's very muggy.

I brought an old laptop back from the US with me: a MacBook that had belonged
to a family member. I upped the RAM from 2 to 6Gb and put in an SSD. Neither
FreeBSD nor NetBSD would boot on it, but GhostBSD did, and it ran nicely. The
trackpad driver - or support - was too generic and limited though, so I finally
settled on Debian 12. That works nicely and I can even surf youtube, though the
laptop display is milky due to its age. Also it's surprisingly quite heavy, so
it's not very portable, but I saved it from a landfill so all is good.

Thankfully there are some national holidays coming up soon, which break up the
awful monotony of work. It's a real drag coming back from vacation, so I'm
trying to easy back into life again.

Take it easy.
