Touhou is a series of video games of the Shmup or STG genre
created by Team Shangai Alice, which despite what the Team
suggests, is made up of a single person, ZUN, who makes the
game 100%, from music to programming and art. Team Shangai
Alice comes from its intentions to mix both Eastern and
Western concepts, which we can see in they protagonists, a
Japanese priestess and a European witch.
Touhou is considered a Doujin series, which means that it
is an independently made game with the intention of being
distributed only among groups of Japanese fans, with these
games coming out at the "Comiket", a large event where all
kinds of developers and amateur artists meet to sell comics
and software with complete freedom of expression, which is
colloquially called From fans to fans.
Touhou is really popular, even being almost b a subgenreof
Shmups by itself, outside of the Arcade or Console SGTs
players. It has such a colorful pattern peculiarities that
are easy to read (despite their density) and slow, creating
beautiful and distinctive patterns.
But that's all? Touhou is just a series of shmup games and
that's it? Not at all.
Touhou has a huge fan base not only for that, ZUN, loving
the doujin culture, he doesn't have his characters under a
strict copyright as long as your work is considered doujin,
you can use its characters and Touhou properties to create
your own comics and games! That's why there are so many
Touhou fangames of all kinds of genres.
And if you don't like video games? It's impossible to talk
about Touhou without talking about its music. With a unique
style, made by Zun himself to accompany the frenetic nature
of the Shmup genre, ZUN created a unique musical style that
helps your mind get into the zone, while perfectly reflect
the personality of the series. There are countless musical
arrangements of the music from the main Touhou games, with
hundreds of arranged Touhou music CDs coming out at every
comiket with performers who do almost exclusively Touhou
arrangements. My favorive is doujin circle who make Touhou
songs is Alstroemeria Records for example.
Touhou is a series packed with charismatic characters, huge
games, and spectacular music, all from the sole mind of a
genius like ZUN, definitely a rabbit hole I recommend going
down at least once.
