'bout time somebody listened. Self-organizing systems theory combines well with evolutionary theory but evolutionary theory is very limiting in its current formulation and has been so for a long time now. But if you apply the definition of life to include other things that DON'T resemble humans, like crystal formations for example, and then even deeper, you can start to see patterns that have been hiding in plain sight forever. He's of a minority of scientists that believe that crystals hold the key to bridging the gap between life and "not life" - by requiring us to redefine life itself. The concept was popular for a time in scientific circles long ago, but became fringe for a long time. It's about time SOMEBODY took the mantle and runs with it. I hope he succeeds!
