Garvey - he was practically screaming, "HEY LOOK I'M PERVERTED BUT GEE GOSH I'M JUST JOKING HAHA AREN'T I ADORABLE?" Yeah, someone should've pulled him aside years ago and said, "Um, look. Don't do that, 'k? Really. Just... don't - unless you'd like a psych eval" Regarding Michael Cieboter - Whatever his intentions, he shouldn't be teaching. Talk about poor judgement on his part: "According to court filings, the student received a Facebook message from Cieboter on Feb. 7, telling her that her brother was receiving poor grades at school. The student told police she ignored the message because she did not want to speak with a former teacher on Facebook." Too chummy. He sent a private message to a former student. It wasn't his student anymore. Plus, he shouldn't be talking about another student's grades with anybody, even if it's the family UNLESS it's those for whom he was "in loco parentis" for. Any contact with former students, i think would be fine in a PUBLIC forum. But private message? Not a student of yours? Talking _about_ another student? No, no no. Just wrong decisions all around. With or without butt-pic, poor judgement and really should've known better. The courts will determine his intentions and being relieved of his teaching duties was a wise choice on the districts part. I get annoyed when situations like this happen because I *was going* to go into teaching. Middle school, the 'talented + gifted" and what they call 'slow learners" for some reason. I don't know why they're called "differently brained" - we're all differently brained. Anyway, I didn't. No money in it. Single guy. No intention of any partners. Dedicated. Male. All red-flags that would've pointed to.... "oh wait, nvm - there's nothing wrong here - Ken's one of the good ones" IN THE END... but the chances for something looking not quite right? Too much pressure and not worth the potential for mischaracterisation, especially in the environment of the early 90s. So yeah, I see several perspectives whenever one of these cases comes to my attention. I ask myself, "What if it was *me* up there? Did I do it?" and I look at the facts as presented. Garvey? 100% perv. Cieboter? Wait and see but get him out of the classroom pronto. More nails in the coffin for males in teaching and I'm glad I didn't make it a life choice. I wouldn't have done any of those things because I'm not a pervert. I wanted to teach because I saw what teachers were doing wrong in school and I wanted to "do it right". But instead, I stand out the outskirts and criticize and teach people stuff wherever they are. On a different planet, I would've been a Robin Williams Dead Poet's Society. *sigh* oh well.
