Old Palm III
============

I wrote about this on the Mastodon, too. I have found that I have the
Palm III. I mean the first model of the Palm III (so, not a IIIx, nor a
IIIe nor the IIIXe). So I probably have the complete Palm III line in
my collection:

* Palm III (2 MB RAM),
* Palm IIIx (4MB RAM, better screen)
* Palm IIIe (just 2MB but that better screen)
* Palm IIIe with transparent case (same specs as plaion IIIe)
* Palm IIIxe (black case, 8MB RAM, better screen)
* TRG Pro (like IIIXe but normal gray case and PCMCIA slot)
* Handera III (I'm not sure if it also counts)
* IBM Workpad (seems to be a IIIe in black and with IBM logo)

I also have some Palm Pilots (both the Personal and the Professional
models) and two of them have installed the "2MB upgrade" boards which
effectively transformed them into the III models (albeit still in old
Palm Pilot cases).

Back to the Palm III - this device seems to be relatively slightly used
but it has upgraded OS - there is OS 3.3 flashed. It also had no
stylus. But it's the smalles issue as I have several spare ones and it
is able to hold the inserted stylus firmly (unlike most of my other
Palms). So the only machine which can give me the original OS 3.0
experience is one of these upgraded Palm Pilots (the second one is was
accidentally upgraded to the 3.3 level).

I have no plans to use this particular device. I have at least 2 pieces
of IIIX, IIIXe and IIIe so it is more safe to use some of them (as I
wrote here in the past, I use the IIIX at home and the IIIxe outdoors
on semi-regular basis). But it is not bad - except its smaller RAM
(still huge when compared with 512kB or 1024kB of the only slightly
older Palm Pilots) it is as usable as any other Palm III. The screen is
a bit worse than the IIIxe's screen but not as much as you may thing
after reading reviews from 1999.

P.S. As an amateur, I'm writing this post on my computer's keyboard and
not on one of these Palms.

But it's SGI-branded Logitech with the Alps switches and it is
connected to my SGI O2, by the way. ;-)
