Slow Phone
==========

The Free Thinker managed managed to disassemble the phone [1] to find
out if it is actually slower than my early 1990s SGI IRIS Indigo
workstation [2]. I really recommend the post [1] to all interested
readers - it's very interesting.

I must confess that my own phone (the Punkt MP01) is not actually
slower than my workstation. It might be slower in OpenGL operations, I
hope. Chances are low anyway because that SGI has only limited hardware
acceleration (it has the Entry graphics board) so - in theory - a
software implementation of OpenGL on a 1 GHz ARM CPU will outperform
the 100 MHz MIPS supported by a few limited chips. But there is no way
how to test it...

Anyway, I also use the Treo 180 which is actually slower: it has the
Motorola Dragon Ball CPU at 33 MHz (no floating point coprocessor, I
think) and 16 MB of RAM! My Indigo has 100 MHz MIPS CPU and 128 MB of
RAM so it must be much faster! It actually is - the SGI runs the Gopher
client easily (the Lynx) in many instances smoothly and the poor Treo
has a lot a work wit just one instance!

Anyway, it is great that there actually is a Gopher cliend for Palm [3]
and I am very, very grateful to Cameron Kaiser for making it.

At least I can confirm that OpenGL on a Nokia 770 tablet (a
software-only renderer is here) is WAY SLOWER than the same scene on
the IRIS Indigo with the Entry graphics :-). I know that the 770 is not
a phone.
