SGI Indigo upgrade (1) ====================== Not a big one: I add another 32 MB of RAM, thus the machine nov has 80 MB in total (the maximul amout of RAM is 96 MB). It may sound like a tiny deal but actually it is a nice addition which allows to run more large programs at once. Old IRIXes (possibly except the IRIX 5.0) are not RAM-hungry and SGI machines can happily run big applications with 128 MB of RAM. But some apps need a lot of memory so any added MB is nice. The hinv command now outputs this: ---------------------------------------------- 1 33 MHZ IP12 Processor FPU: MIPS R2010A/R3010 VLSI Floating Point Chip Revision: 4.0 CPU: MIPS R2000A/R3000 Processor Chip Revision: 3.0 On-board serial ports: 2 On-board bi-directional parallel port Data cache size: 32 Kbytes Instruction cache size: 32 Kbytes Main memory size: 80 Mbytes Integral Ethernet: ec0, version 0 Integral SCSI controller 0: Version WD33C93B, revision C Disk drive: unit 2 on SCSI controller 0 Disk drive: unit 1 on SCSI controller 0 Iris Audio Processor: revision 10 Graphics board: GR2-XS24 ---------------------------------------------- At the moment I run here a Netscape (for reading today Technomorous's articlre about databanks), have some instances on the Gvim 8.0, teh GNU Octave and my finite lement code and everything is still fast and snappy.
