Return of the library
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I seem to have been blessed with an extreme amount of good
fortune regarding the library. Not only have they been reopened
after Covid, and have waved all late fees (of which I owed a large
amount), but I have by a staggering coincidence, moved two blocks
from a branch.
It is a small sleepy outpost, which suits me just fine.
Previously I frequented the downtown library, a rough place due
to the unfortunate location next to the local jail. My new
branch is lacking in selection, but since I can just send books
there, its not an issue.
As an adult my use of the library has declined, not due to
a lack of reading, but simply because I can afford to buy my own
books. As a result I have built up a pretty extensive personal
library. I also expect that the ongoing computerization of
the library is also at fault. As more resources were dedicated
to turning libraries into internet cafes they became less
comfortable for readers. In truth I did grow up with computers
in libraries, I'm not old enough to have used a card file, but it
did end up taking over as time went on.
This all does make me nostalgic for libraries I used to know,
perhaps I well write on them later.
