Excluding the "usual suspects" the issue is largely hidden on back pages, barely discussed and definitely not on the agenda of usually vocal rights advocates. Why is that? And how is Assange different than other journalists that were targeted? Can it be that Assange does not sit either on the Democrat or the Republican side and thus does not get any support from neither? I really don't expect a conservative to activate on that direction, but someone that is identifying as a liberal and seems to be sensitive on such topics is really striking not to take part on this. Sadly I suspect that party politics (Democrats & Hillary's emails) playing a more important role. This case feels more and more like one of the things that our generation needs to take a stand-on: essentially it's a tipping point for privacy and state control, sadly enough however it doesn't feel like society largely has engaged.Mainstream press coverage was pathetic and there were very few demonstrations. Even in those we're talking a few tens of people showing up. Even on social media engagement was relatively small. If I compare this with what is happening in Hong Kong for example it's quite clear that society at large is not concerned about Assange: absorbed with photographing its food, gathering likes and saving for the next gizmo my generation is opening the door to a dystopian future. henrycase@sdf.org
