Apart from the retro chic factor which cannot be under appreciated, the sole fact that you can cut distractions to a minimum and get to the core of things is simply brilliant. Visually the simplicity is amazing, more importantly gone are the stupid advertising messages, popping-up windows, animations, videos and lots of other crap, I have been waiting for this for a long time: who would have guessed it has always been there since the 90s? My friend K. is struggling with the same thing: outside office hours he uses an iPhone 4 that he has stripped from most distractions and operates as a... phone with a couple of applications. It's the only way he can feel relaxed. I feel the same way: life has become complicated, I need simplicity and disconnect more than ever, I need time to think and read, enough with the information overload. I read and thoroughly enjoyed Kvothe's phlog entry around the "how to do nothing" mantra. Jenny Odell's article [1] was an eye opener in many ways, if you haven't read it please do. Once you connect the dots it's surprising how liberating of a feeling this can be. I have been a New Yorker subscriber for years, I read the paper magazine and it has been a way for me to manage my digital media consumption.
