The Stone and the Raindrop
Donald P. Goodman III

The world has webs beyond our merely mortal lore;
just as the stone which drops into the calmest pond
can never see the ripples spread from shore to shore
and lap upon the mud that lays so far beyond;
and as the raindrop, falling on the arid soil
and black'ning it with moisture cannot see the ends
which rise from all its self-destroying, loyal toil,
nor know the many sprouts and growth to which it tends;
so no man can e'en hope to see with mortal eyes
what thoughtless chore or conscious deed to cruel fate lends:
for he who claims to see these circles clearly lies;
we must entrust all ends to Him Who turns the skies.
