So, I decided to do a bit of testing with my Mac Pro, since the heat was
still getting to be quite insane for what I've been using it for, and had some
interesing results.

While just using it for text editing and basic web usage (no video or
anything), it runs fairly cool. In fact, even running it with on-disk video and
various games had little effect. Listening to music through iTunes did nothing
to the temperatures either, which is surprising with how much various people
seem to complain about it. Even *Flash* video and animations did nothing.

However, HTML5-based /audio/ and /video/ players caused this thing to start
turning into a space heater in a hurry under both Windows 7 and MacOS 10.6.8. I
/would/ say I'm surprised, but I'm not. This has been a problem on my Dell XPS,
the Acer laptop that I've got Kubuntu on, and even my iPhone. It's just an
intense process for the hardware, and I don't think I have any way of changing
that to make it better.

Well, one more reason to use Icecast/Shoutcast streams for my background
noise during the day.

In the gophserspace, xiled wrote[0] about gadgets and having to pry themself
from buying a neat thing. All I have to say about that is, "I know the
feeling." I have to do that *every* time I go thrifting or to eBay. Especially
if I see an older PC or Mac sitting out somewhere.

Elsewhere, solderpunk is putting together information for a potential
protocol called "Project Gemini"[1], which aims to be between Gopher and the
Web as far as weight and featureset. Honestly, that makes me happy, since I
enjoy seeing new technologies born from actual passion, instead of corporate
needs. I'm going to love watching this take shape.
