2024-07-23 Much ink has been spilled about the complete cluster f*ck the Crowdstrike outage was and still is. I'm not going to beat a dead horse about it though. One thing that I notice is that there's a lot of jawing and spitballin' about how Crowdstrike has 50% of Fortune 500 market share and that's a risky thing. But hey man how about Microsoft Windows? Certainly the Crowdstrike thing was bad and we should look at diversifying our endpoint security but are we just going to ignore that 99% of all corporate desktops are running the same operating system?!? Like would we be in this situation if the most popular desktop operating system in the world didn't require endpoint security that has to run in kernel mode just to have a chance at protecting itself? I'm not a Windows hater by any stretch. I grew up on DOS and Windows and have a great fondness for the 90s Microsoft operating systems..afterall I'm a PCMR gamer for life. But it has always been clear that Microsoft Windows just is not secure by DEFAULT. We've had decades to figure that out. I would love to see Microsoft start looking towards a real future for its Operating Systems instead of just rehashing the same old thing over and over again. It would be a challenge but why can't Microsoft do something with immutable Operating Systems concepts or container/VM operating systems like Qubes. I'm not the hugest fan of Apple operating systems either but it would be nice if Apple could be more of a player in the corporate space. Alas, the Mac is just a heritage product for Apple nowadays. maybe i'm just old and grouchy. Afterall, I'm on SDF posting a phlog. Maybe it's just not worth investing in Operating Systems anymore or even general purpose computers. Sad.
