AFX-160 (430-1241) Operation Faxback Doc. # 6284

During normal operation, the fax switch monitors the telephone line.
When a regular call comes in, the fax switch directs the call to the
telephone, fax machine, fax modem, or answering machine as follows.

If you answer the call and the call is a regular call, talk as usual.

If you answer the call and you hear fax alert tones (tones that
indicate the incoming call is a fax call), wait until the fax
machine begins ringing and then hang up the phone. The fax switch
directs the call to the fax machine or fax modem, regardless of
whether or not you hang up.

If the answering machine answers the call and the call is a regular
call, the answering machine records the caller's message as usual.

If the answering machine answers the call and it is a fax call, the
fax switch detects fax alert tones and directs the call to the fax
machine or fax modem.

If neither you nor an answering machine answers the call, after the
set number of rings the switch automatically directs the fax call to
the fax machine or fax modem. If it is not a fax call, the fax
switch disconnects the call.

NOTES: The POWER/IN USE indicator slowly flashes red when the fax switch
        is in use.

You can set the fax switch to direct the call to the fax machine
or fax modem after more or less than 5 rings.

If the fax machine has a delayed ring (or answer) feature, set it
to the minimum delay so it is compatible with the fax switch.

MANUAL FAX RECEPTION

You can activate the fax switch to accept a transmission from a manual
fax machine.

During the conversation or when the answering machine answers the call,
either you or the originator of the fax must press 1, #, and 1 on a touch
tone-keypad to activate the fax switch. After the code is entered, both
parties must hang up their handsets. Then the sender of the fax presses
their machine's SEND button.

NOTES: If either of you presses a wrong key, wait about 10 seconds before
        you try again.

The fax switch lets you use the phone's * and # keys for other
functions, such as computer banking. The fax switch activates the
fax machine or fax modem only when you press 1, #, and 1.

EXTENSION TELEPHONE

If an extension telephone on the same line as the fax switch is in use,
the fax switch does not allow the fax machine or fax modem to access the
telephone line. This ensures that regular phone calls in progress are
not interrupted by outgoing fax transmissions.

ROTARY SERVICE

If you have rotary (pulse) service, you can activate the fax machine or
fax modem during an incoming call using a phone on the same line as the
fax switch and fax machine or fax modem. Dial 3 on the extension
telephone to direct the incoming call to the fax machine or fax modem.

NOTES: You can only direct the call using an extension phone on the same
line. A caller cannot activate the fax machine or fax modem by
        dialing 3.

The above procedure is for incoming calls only.

OPTIONAL VOICE AND DATA GUARD

An optional Voice and Data Guard, such as Radio Shack Cat. No 43-107,
prevents the interruption of fax transmissions caused by another
telephone device on the same telephone line as the fax machine or fax
modem. You can use a voice and data guard for the following purposes:

When you use cordless telephones, extension telephones, speed dialers,
computer modems, or other related telephone devices on the same telephone
line as the fax machine or fax modem.

When the answering machine is too far away to easily connect to the
AFX-160's TAD jack.

When you install the fax switch on a multi-line key system unit (KSU)
telephone system.

To install a voice and data guard, follow the instructions provided with
the module.

CHANGING THE RING NUMBER

You can set the fax machine or fax modem to automatically answer calls
after a set number of rings from 1 to 9. The fax switch is factory-set
to direct the call to the fax machine or fax modem after 5 rings.

NOTES: The fax switch's ring setting must exceed the answering machine's
ring setting by at least 1 ring.

The fax switch returns to the 5 ring setting when there is a power
failure, if there are no backup batteries installed.

If the fax switch is connected to a telephone jack on the
computer's fax modem, set the fax switch to answer the call after
only 2 rings. Otherwise, the transmitting fax machine might
disconnect before the fax switch answers the call.

To change the fax switch's ring setting, do the following:

1. Press 1, *, and then 99 on an extension phone's touch-tone keypad.
    The fax switch beeps once.

2. Press *, 3, and the number of rings (1-9). The fax switch beeps
twice to confirm the new setting.

3. Hang up the phone.
