300 BPS ModemFone 100 ((260-1386) Installation Faxback Doc. # 5990

CONNECTING TO THE TELEPHONE LINE
You Modemfone 100 has been designed and constructed to conform to federal
regulations and can be connected to the phone line as described in this
manual.

Please note that each product connected to the telephone line places a cer-
tain load on the line. We designate this as the "Ringer Equivalence Number."

When using more than one product on the line, total all the ringer equival-
ence numbers. If they total more than 5, your phone may not ring. In rural
areas a total of 3 may impair ringer operation. To be sure, check with your
local telephone company.

The registration number as well as ringer equivalence number appears on the
bottom of the unit.

WARNING: The Modemfone 100 must not be connected to:
* Coin-operated phones
* Party-line phones

The Modemfone 100 uses modular-type connector plugs and jacks (the same ones
required for all new telephone equipment). If your home has the older 4-prong
receptacles, Radio Shack sells the modular-to-4-prong adapter (279-351) that
is necessary to make the conversion. If your telephones are wired directly
to the wall, you may install the jack yourself, with accessories available
at Radio Shack, or have the telephone company update your wiring to the
modular system.

NOTE: The telephone company is authorized to charge you for any work that
they do to install such jacks. They might ask you for the U.S.O.C. number
for the plug connection. This number is RJ-11C.

CONNECTING TO A COMPUTER
For Models II,III,4,4P,12,16,2000,6000, and DT-1, you can directly connect
Modemfone 100's RS-232C cable connector to the computer's corresponding
RS-232C cable connector, and the other end into your computer.

For the following computers, you'll need optional boards that contain RS-232C
interface to connect to your Modemfone 100. Contact your Radio Shack Computer
Center for details.

COMPUTER INTERFACE BOARD CATALOG NUMBER
Model I RS-232C Interface Board (with cable)* 260-1145
Tandy 1000 RS-232C Option Board 250-1006
Tandy 1200 Captain Multifunction Board 250-3061

* You will need an RS-232C cable connector (260-1495) to make this connec-
tion.

For the Color Computer, you will need an RS-232 Program Pak (260-2226). In-
sert the Pak into the cartridge slot of the Color Computer, and connect
Modemfone 100's RS-232C connector to the other end of the Pak.

If more detailed information is needed, refer to your computer owner's
manual.

CONNECTING TO A POWER SUPPLY
The AC power supply is necessary to activate the built-in modem. Insert the
plug of the AC adapter (provided) into the AC power jack on the rear side of
the Modemfone 100. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet or an approved
power strip, such as Tandy's Auto Control Power Strip (260-1429) or Line Fil-
ter (260-1244).

There is a slot on the rear side of the Modemfone 100. After connecting the
AC adapter, route the adapter cable through this slot to prevent accidental
disconnection of the adapter plug.

Be sure to connect the adapter to the modem before you plug the adapter into
the wall outlet. Otherwise, damage to the adapter could result.

CAUTION: Use only the UL-Listed adapter supplied with the Modemfone 100.
Another type of adapter could damage the built-in modem.
