CLEARING TEXT IN MEMORY

To make more room to store text in memory, clear unwanted text from memory
so that you can enter new text. The new typed text remains in memory until
you clear it or you turn off power. If you want to save text, see the
"Diskette Operations" chapter to find out how to store text to a diskette.

1. Press [MENU] to display the Menu screen.

2. Press [4]. The Clear Text screen appears and asks if you really want to
   clear the text from memory.

3. Press [Y] to clear the text from memory. The screen returns to the Menu
   screen.

   All settings return to the preset settings, except the print impact and
   the ribbon selection. All functions except the spelling check are cleared
   automatically.

   Press [N] to prevent clearing the text in memory.

MEMORY FULL

1. The memory counter in the status area indicates the percentage of memory
   remaining.

2. When the remaining memory is down to 1% and there is text in the
   copy/move memory, the window shown below appears. If asks you whether you
   want to clear the copy/move memory.

NOTE: The text for copying or moving remains in the copy/move memory,
      occupying space in the text memory. You can obtain more space in
      memory for text by clearing the copy/move memory.

3. Press [Y] to clear the copy/move memory. Continue typing text.

4. If the remaining memory drops to 1% when there is no text in the
   copy/move memory, the message Text memory is full appears for a few
   seconds. If shows that you can enter no more than about 240 characters.

5. Finish the text. A beep sounds as you type each character.

6. Press [MENU] to return to the Menu screen. Store the current text to the
   diskette as a file and clear the text memory. Then continue the text as
   a separate file.

NOTE: When the remaining memory is down to about 90 characters or less, the
      message Text memory is full appears every time you type a character.
      It warns you that you are very close to filling up the WP-100's
      memory. Finish typing text before the text memory is completely full.

LINE PRINTING FUNCTION

As you type text in memory, you can print it out line by line on the paper
by following these steps:

1. Press [CODE] + [L] (L PRINT) to activate the line printing function.

2. Type the text. As you type a character, it appears on the display and the
   printhead moves one space to the right.

   Make any corrections on the display before printing out the line. You can
   not correct characters after they are printed on the paper.

   The line is printed on the paper when the cursor advances to the next
   line by the word wrap or when you press [RETURN].

3. Press [CODE] + [L] (L PRINT) again to terminate the line printing
   function. 

   The text you have typed remains in memory. You can print it, edit it, or
   store it to the diskette.

NOTE: While using the line printing function, you can not:

* set page format
* search for or replace a word
* use the dictionaries
* check the spelling throughout a document
* move the cursor to the beginning/end of the previous/next page

If you try any of these functions, the WP-100 simply ignores the key
sequence you press.

DISKETTE OPERATIONS

INSERTING/EJECTING A DISKETTE

Diskettes are double-sided and can be used with either side up. The drive
always writers on the top side of a diskette.

1. Insert a diskette into the disk drive slot with the side you want to use
   facing up. Push in the diskette until it clicks into place.

2. Press the disk eject button. The diskette pops out and you can take it
   out.

INITIALIZING A DISKETTE

Before using a new diskette or a diskette that has been used with any other
wordprocessor, you must initialize it. Initialing a diskette sets up all the
space on the top side of a diskette, so you can store text. each side of the
diskette must be initialized separately.

1. Insert the diskette with the side which you want to initialize facing up.

2. Press [MENU] to display the Menu screen.

3. Press [8]. The Initialize Disk screen appears and asks if you really want
   to initialize the diskette.

NOTE: If you initialize a used diskette that has any text on it, all the
      files on that side of the diskette are erased.

4. Press [Y] to start initializing the diskette. It takes about 20 seconds
   to complete initializing one side of the diskette.

   Press [N] to cancel.

5. After initializing one side of the diskette, eject it and turn it over,
   then initialize the other side.

STORING TEXT TO THE DISKETTE

After you type text, store it as a file to the diskette for future use. This
way you can have a copy of your text, including its format, even after you
clear it from the memory or turn off the power. Later you can recall the
text for printing or editing. One each side, a diskette can hold up to
50,000 characters divided into a maximum of 20 separate files.

To store a new file:

1. Press [MENU] to display the Menu screen.

2. Press [3]. The Store Text screen appears.

3. Type the filename. The name can contain up to 16 characters, including
   spaces.

   Press [<X|], [<X| WORD], or [CODE] + [<X| WORD] (<X| LINE) to correct
   errors. Press [INSERT] to insert characters.

4. Press [RETURN] to begin storing the file.

5. When storing is completed, the screen returns to the Menu screen.

CAUTION: Do not remove the diskette or turn off the WP-100 while the disk
         drive is running. It might damage the contents of the diskette or
         the mechanism of the disk drive.

To store the edited file for overwriting:

1. Press [MENU] to display the Menu screen.

2. Press [3]. The Store Text screen appears.

3. The original file name appears beside ENTER FILE NAME:

   or

   Press [up arrow] to move the cursor in the disk directory. Position the
   cursor on the desired file name by pressing [up arrow] or [down arrow],
   and press [RETURN]. The file name is automatically entered.

4. Press [RETURN]. The message appears to be sure you really want to 
   overwrite the file.

5. Press [Y] to begin overwriting the file.

   When storing is completed, the Menu screen appears again.

   Press [N] to cancel overwriting of the file.

RECALLING A FILE FROM A DISKETTE

For editing or printing text stored on a diskette, recall the file from the
diskette into the text memory.

To recall a single file from a diskette:

1. Insert the diskette with the side which holds the file you want to recall
   facing up.

2. Clear the text in memory. (Press [4] in the Menu screen.)

3. Press [5]. The Recall File screen appears.

4. Position the cursor on the file name to be recalled by pressing [down
   arrow] or [up arrow].

5. Press [RETURN]. When recalling is completed, the Text screen with the
   recalled text appears automatically. The page format of the recalled file
   is automatically set.

To recall and insert a file into the text in memory:

You can insert a recalled file into any position in the present text in the
memory. It is useful to store a repeated phrase as a separate file and
recall it as many times as you want.

1. Position the cursor at the point in the text where you want to insert the
   file.

2. Press [MENU] to display the Menu screen.

3. Press [5]. The Recall File screen appears.

4. Position the cursor on the file name to be recalled by pressing [down
   arrow] or [up arrow].

5. Press [RETURN]. The recalled file is inserted to the last cursor position
   in the text. Then, the Text screen appears with the cursor in the
   position it was in prior to inserting text. The page format of the
   recalled file is ignored.

DELETING A FILE FROM A DISKETTE

You can delete an unwanted file from the diskette.

1. Press [MENU] to display the Menu screen.

2. Press [6]. The Delete File screen appears.

3. Position the cursor on the file name to be deleted by pressing [up arrow]
   or [down arrow].

4. Press [RETURN]. The selected file name appears beside DELETE FILE.

   The next message appears to make sure if you really want to delete the
   file.

5. Press [Y] to delete the file. The Menu screen appears again.

   Press [N] to cancel deletion of the file.

RENAMING A FILE ON THE DISKETTE

You can change the name of a file that is stored on the diskette.

1. Press [MENU] to display the Menu screen.

2. Press [7]. The Rename File screen appears.

3. Type the old file name.

   or

   Press [up arrow] to move the cursor in the disk directory. Position the
   cursor on the file name to be renamed by pressing [down arrow] and [up
   arrow]. Press [RETURN].

4. The file name appears beside OLD FILE NAME:

5. Press [RETURN]. The cursor moves to beside NEW FILE NAME:

6. Type the new file name. The name can contain up to 16 characters, includ-
   ing spaces.

   Press [<X|], [<X| WORD], or [CODE] + [<X| WORD] (<X| LINE) to correct
   errors.  Press [INSERT] to insert characters.

7. Press [RETURN] to rename the file. The Menu screen appears again.

DISKETTE WRITE PROTECTION

To protect the important text stored on the diskette, remove the write
protection tab on each side of the diskette, as indicated below.

Once you write protect the diskette, you can not store, delete or rename the
files in the diskette, nor can you initialize the diskette.

1. Break of the tab beside the "A" mark at the upper left corner of the
   diskette to write protect side A.

2. Break off the tab beside the "B" mark to write protect side B.

   If you want to change information on a file that is stored on a diskette,
   enter it into text memory. Then, store it to a diskette that is not
   write-protected.

   If another diskette is not available, you can cover the write-protect
   hole with opaque plastic tape with permanent adhesive.

CAUTION: If this tape comes off inside the drive, damage could occur.
