2400 BPS Pocket Faxmodem (250-3105) Power Faxback Doc. # 5770

The Power Cube

The power cube that comes with the faxmodem plugs into any standard 110
volt, 60 cycle outlet, the kind found in the U.S. The faxmodem must be
used only with the power cube provided with the manufacturer. Simply plug
the power cube into any standard 115 volt outlet, and then into the jack
marked "Power".

Using Battery Power

Alternatively, you can run the faxmodem using a 9 volt battery. An
alkaline battery will provide a longer operating time and is highly
recommended. You can also use a rechargeable battery. To conserve
battery power, turn off the faxmodem when it is not in use. When battery
power is low, the LB (low battery) light comes on (as long as you are
attempting to use battery power).

Using a fresh, good quality, alkaline battery under normal operating
conditions, you can expect to use the faxmodem for at least seven hours of
continuous data transmission. When the faxmodem enters sleep mode (see
below), the battery will last about 100 hours.

Getting Power via Your PC's Serial Port

If your faxmodem is connected to a 25-pin D connector on a PC-compatible
computer, you may be able to power the faxmodem from the computer, without
the need for a battery or a power cube. Whether this will work depends on
your computer. You can find out by removing the battery, disconnecting
the faxmodem from the power cube, and connecting the faxmodem to the PC's
serial port. If the MR light is on, your computer may supply the
necessary power.

Switching from One Power Source to Another

If you are using battery power and the low battery light comes on, do not
switch to the power cube by simply plugging it in. Instead, finish what
you are doing, turn the faxmodem off, and then plug in the power cube.
Likewise, you should not disconnect the power cube from the faxmodem and
expect to immediately switch to battery power or serial port power.

Sleep Mode

Your faxmodem is designed to save power by automatically entering "sleep
mode" when it encounters five seconds of no activity. While this feature
is particularly relevant to battery operation, sleep mode will also occur
when you are using the power cube or getting power via the serial
connector.

You don't have to do anything to enable sleep mode, nor can you disable
this feature. The MR light dims when the faxmodem is in sleep mode. The
faxmodem does still use some power in this mode, so it is advisable to
turn it off if it is not in use and you are running on battery power.

Power Up and Installation Testing

Flip the power switch on your faxmodem to the ON position. The MR (Modem
Ready) light should come on. Depending on various faxmodem settings and
factors external to the modem, other lights may be on.

When you first turn on the faxmodem, it automatically performs a self-test
to verify that it is functioning properly. This test operates in the
"analog loopback mode" using internally generated test patterns. If an
error is found, it will send an error message to the monitor the first
time it is used.
