To ensure expert installation, we recommend that you have Radio Shack ser-
vice technicians install the hard drive kit and the hard disk drive and the
chosen hard disk controller board. The technicians can then check the rest
of your system.
If you decide to install the hard disk drive and the controller board
yourself, read the following procedures completely before you begin. Then,
follow all steps carefully.
Because static electricity can destroy integrated circuits, be sure to
discharge any accumulated static electricity by touching a grounded metal
object before handling the hard disk drive or touching any of the computer's
logic boards.
INSTALLING THE UNIVERSAL MOUNTING KIT (TANDY 3000 HL)
If you are installing the 70-megabyte hard disk drive in a Tandy 3000 HL,
you must first install the universal mounting kit (provided with your com-
puter). Refer to the universal mounting kit installation manual for
instructions.
REMOVING THE COVER
If you have not already done so, remove the system unit's cover by following
the instructions in the installation and operation manual supplied with your
computer. Be sure to observe all safety precautions as described.
Note: If you have any early model Tandy 3000, remember that you might need
to remove the fan filter before removing the cover.
PREPARING THE HARD DISK DRIVE
Your hard disk drive contains a drive select jumper and a line termination
resistor. Before you can install the drive, you need to set this jumper and
resistor according to your drive's function (primary hard disk drive or
secondary hard disk drive). Follow the appropriate procedure.
If this is your only hard disk drive, be sure its line termination resistor
in installed. If you have a secondary hard disk drive, remove the line
termination resistor from your 70-megabyte (primary) drive.
For a secondary hard disk drive, insert a connector over the second pair of
pins from the line termination resistor.
Be sure its line termination resistor is installed. In this case, remove
the line termination resistor from the primary hard disk drive.
Note: If you already have a hard disk installed and you are installing the
70-megabyte hard disk as a secondary drive, you might find it easier to
configure the 70-megabyte drive as the non-terminal drive. To do so, leave
the installed hard disk terminated (no change to the drive termination
status) and remove the line termination resistor from the 70-megabyte
(secondary) drive.
If you are working with a Tandy 3000 HL, you are ready to install the hard
disk drive. YOu do not need to remove the drive tower. See "Installing the
Hard Disk Drive".
If you are installing the hard disk drive in a Tandy 3000 or a Tandy 3000 HD,
you need to remove the drive tower.
REMOVING THE DRIVE TOWER
For easy drive installation in a Tandy 3000, 3000 HD or 4000, you can remove
the sheet metal chassis that houses the disk drives (the drive tower).
Before you remove the drive tower, note the location of and disconnect any
cables attached to the internal drives. Then, remove the seven screws that
secure the tower to the chassis (four on the bottom, three on the front).
Carefully lift the drive tower out of the system unit.
If you are working with a Tandy 3000 HD, you are now ready to install the
hard disk drive. Skip the next section of this manual.
If you are installing the hard disk drive in a previously floppy-based Tandy
3000 or 4000, you need to remove the load resistor from the drive tower.
REMOVING THE LOAD RESISTOR
If your computer is a previously floppy-based Tandy 3000 or 4000, a load
resistor is attached to the inside of the drive tower. Disconnect the load
resistor from its cable by unplugging it at the white connector. Remove the
two screws that secure the load resistor to the drive tower, and store the
load resistor in a safe place. If you later remove the hard disk(s) to
return to a floppy-only system, you might reinstall the load resistor.
You are now ready to install the hard disk drive.
INSTALLING THE HARD DISK DRIVE
Carefully unpack the hard drive. Remove the media error map (in its plastic
envelope) from the top of the new drive, and attach it to the top of your
computer's drive tower. Copy the media error map information to the back of
your installation and operation manual.
The procedure for installing the hard disk drive varies according to the
computer and the function of the drive (primary or secondary). Follow the
appropriate procedure.
Tandy 3000/4000 (Primary Hard Disk Drive)
If you are installing the hard disk drive as a primary drive in a Tandy 3000
or 4000, attach the four shock isolators to the bottom set of mounting holes
on both sides of the hard disk drive.
slide the hard disk drive into the bottom slot of the computer's drive tower.
Do not let the drives slide against each other. Use the four shoulder screws
provided with the hard disk drive kit to secure the hard disk drive to the
drive tower.
If you are adding another disk drive, you should also install it at this
time.
Refer to the installation instructions that come with the drive.
You are now ready to complete all connections and install the hard disk
controller board. See "Connecting the Cables to the Controller Board".
Tandy 3000/4000 and Tandy 3000 HD (Secondary Hard Disk Drive)
If you are installing the hard disk drive as a secondary drive in a Tandy
3000/4000 or 3000 HD, install the four grommets, which come with this hard
disk drive kit, into the mounting holes in the middle drive slot of the
computer's drive tower.
Now, slide the hard disk drive into the middle slot of the computer's drive
tower. (Don't let the drive slide against one another.) Use the four
shoulder screws provided with this kit to secure the hard disk drive to the
drive tower.
You are now ready to complete all connections and install the hard disk
controller board. See "Connecting the Cables to the Controller Board."
Tandy 3000 HL (Primary or Secondary)
For a Tandy 3000 HL installation, follow the instructions in the universal
mounting kit manual (provided with your computer) to install the hard disk
(a half-height drive).
Note: IF you are installing a secondary hard disk drive, the mounting
brackets are already installed in your computer. In this case, slide the
bracket/disk drive assembly out of the drive tower. Then, follow the
instructions in the universal mounting kit manual to install the drive be-
tween the brackets.
You are now ready to complete all connections and install the hard disk
controller board. See "Connecting the Cables to the Controller Board".
CONNECTING THE CABLES TO THE CONTROLLER BOARD
Caution: A low humidity environment and walking on carpeted floors, among
other things, can build up static electricity on you. Discharge any built-
up static electricity by touching a grounded, metal object before you begin.
The hard disk controller board is difficult to access after it is installed.
Therefore, you should set the board's jumpers and connect all cables to the
board before you install it. Use the following steps to prepare the hard
disk controller board for installation.
Note: When connecting an external hard disk, you must use the cables pro-
vided in the hard disk external cable kit (Cat. No. 250-4063). If you plan
to connect an external hard disk, skip steps 2-5 of this section, and refer
to the external hard disk cable installation manual for the proper cable
connections.
1. Check the hard disk controller board to be sure the board's jumpers are
set as directed by your controller board installation manual. If the
jumper settings are not correct, remove and reposition the jumpers.
2. Connect the 34-pin controller cable to its connector on the controller
board (as directed by the controller board installation manual).
Note: Do not force any cables when connecting them to the hard disk
controller board. The connectors are keyed so that you can insert them in
only one direction.
3. If your hard disk controller board also controls your floppy drives,
connect the 34-pin floppy disk drive cable to the controller board.
Otherwise, be sure that the floppy disk drives are properly connected to
the floppy disk drive controller board.
4. Connect the primary hard drive's 20-pin data cable to its connector on
the hard drive controller board (as directed by the controller board
installation manual).
5. If you have two internal hard drives installed, connect the secondary
drive's 20-pin data cable to the controller board, as directed by the
controller board manual.
INSTALLING THE HARD DISK CONTROLLER BOARD
Now, you are ready to install the hard disk controller board. Follow these
steps:
1. Select an empty, full-length option slot in which to install the hard
disk controller board. The best location for this board is the slot
from which the drive cables can most easily reach the drive.
2. If you did not have a controller card previously installed in this slot,
remove the metal bracket that covers the expansion slot (on the back of
the computer). Remove the screw from the metal bracket. Then, tilt the
bracket away from the opening, and lift it out. (Follow the instruct-
ions in the hard disk controller installation manual if you need to re-
move an existing floppy diskette controller board.)
3. Slip the front edge of the hard disk controller board into the plastic
card guide at the front of the computer, and insert the opposite edge
(the board's metal mounting bracket) into the option slot opening. As
you slide the front end of the board down the card guide, push the
board's edge connector firmly into the option slot. Be sure the board
is fully seated.
4. Use the screws you removed previously to secure the hard disk controller
board's mounting bracket to the back panel of the computer.
COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION
To complete the hard disk controller board installation, connect all inter-
nal disk drive cables as directed below. Do not force the connections or
twist the cables. The easiest way to assure that the disk drive cables lie
flat is to thread them under the power cables.
1. Disconnect the main power cable connector from the main logic board by
pressing in on the tabs as you lift the connector.
2. Connect your primary drive's data cable to the 20-pin card edge on your
primary hard disk drive. (This cable is already connected to the hard
disk controller board.)
3. If you have two internal hard disk drives installed, connect your
secondary hard drive's data cable to the 20-pin card edge on your
secondary hard disk drive. (This cable is connected to the hard disk
controller board.)
4. Connect one of the hard disk controller cable's edge connectors to the
34-pin card edge on your primary hard disk drive. (This cable is
connected to the hard disk controller board.)
You can connect either of the two edge connectors to the primary
hard disk drive. However, it is easier to use the middle connector
for the primary drive and the end connector for a secondary drive.
5. If you have two internal hard disk drives installed, connect the remain-
ing edge connector on the hard disk controller cable to the 34-pin card
edge on the secondary hard disk drive.
6. Connect the end edge connector on the floppy disk cable to the 34-pin
card edge on your primary floppy disk drive. (This cable is connected
to the hard disk controller board.)
7. If you have two floppy disk drives installed, connect the middle edge
connector on the floppy disk cable to the 34-pin card edge on your
secondary floppy disk drive.
8. Connect the 4-pin power cables to your internal disk drives. These
power cables are identical and can be connected interchangeably to any
internal disk drives.
9. If you previously removed the drive tower, replace it. Use the same
screws you removed. Be sure that no cables are under the drive tower
when you replace it.
10. Reconnect the main power cable connector to the main logic board.
11. For a Tandy 3000 or 3000 HD, connect the drive activity light.
12. After all internal cables are properly connected, replace the cover.
13. Reconnect all peripheral cables and the power cord.
