INSTALLING THE PAPER RACK
The paper rack enables fanfold and single-sheet paper to feed smoothly into
the printer. Mount this rack on the printer before operation. To mount the
paper rack:
FOR SINGLE-SHEET PAPER:
Hold the paper rack upright and insert the rack into the slant grooves on
both sides of the printer so the hook-shaped tabs face upward. Then place
it in the slant position.
FOR CONTINUOUS FANFOLD PAPER:
Hold the paper rack upright and insert the hook-shaped tabs of the rack
into the holes on both sides of the printer. Place the paper rack in its
horizontal position.
When using fanfold paper, set the paper rack to the horizontal position. In
this position, you can slide the paper rack forward or backward. Slide the
paper rack forward in order to lock the printer cover and tear off the
paper easily. Slide the paper rack backward to open the cover.
You can adjust the paper rack's paper guides according to the paper width
you are using. Position the left paper guide within 1 1/2" from the left
end. When using narrow paper, position the paper so that the left edge
is within 1 1/2" of the left side. This ensures proper operation of the
PAPER OUT indicator and reduces the possibility of a paper jam. Place a
sheet of paper against the paper rack's left paper guide and slide the
right paper guide to the left to match the paper's width.
LOADING PAPER
NOTE: When loading paper (single-sheet of fanfold), be sure to insert the
paper into the opening correctly.
To prevent paper skewing or jamming, insert the paper into the printer
directly from the back of the printer. Also, position the paper rack pro-
perly to help prevent paper jamming.
SINGLE-SHEET PAPER
1. Be sure the printer is off. Open the printer cover.
2. Set the paper rack to the single-sheet position.
3. Move the friction lever backward (toward the back side of the printer).
4. Position the paper on the paper rack and align it with the paper guide.
Since the auto-paper-loading system pulls the paper into the printer,
just place the paper in the paper rack. If you insert the paper into
the opening, the printer might think that the paper is already in place
and might not activate the auto-loading mechanism.
5. Turn on the printer.
6. Pull the paper bail toward you. The paper advances to the print-start
position.
NOTE: If the PAPER OUT indicator blinks, the auto-paper-loading system did
not work. In this case, remove the sheet add position it again.
7. Push the paper bail away from you.
8. Move the friction lever forward (toward the front side of the printer)
for horizontal alignment of the paper. After aligning the paper, push
the friction lever backward again.
9. To align the paper vertically, use the paper feed knob or the front
panel LINE FEED button (described in "Basic Controls") to advance the
paper. Adjust the paper as necessary.
10. Set the print head adjustment lever (located on the inside right of
the printer) to the appropriate position.
11. Close the printer cover.
HINTS AND TIPS ON SINGLE-SHEET PAPER LOADING
* With the paper installed, printing continues until the paper passes the
paper empty sensor. The PAPER OUT indicator lights to indicate that the
printer is out of paper. The printer changes to off-line mode. Insert
another sheet and use the auto-load feature to advance the paper. When
the paper is in place, press the ON/OFF LINE button and the printing
continues. (The PAPER OUT indicator goes out.)
* Remember to set the friction lever toward the back side of the printer
when using single-sheet paper.
* To print another few lines after the paper empty sensor detects the
paper end, press the ON/OFF LINE button. Be careful not to exceed the
bottom edge of the paper.
FANFOLD PAPER
The printer accepts standard fanfold paper from 4.5 to 10" wide. The
paper an contain one original plus two copies.
1. Turn off the printer. Remove the paper rack.
2. If necessary, pull the tractor lock lever to release the pin-feed
paper clamp and adjust the clamp positions for the width of paper you
are using.
3. Open the pin-feed paper clamps.
4. Align the holes in the paper with the pin-feed sprockets.
5. Close the pin-feed clamps, and adjust the position of the paper.
6. Move the friction lever toward the front of the printer.
7. Turn on the printer.
8. Pull the paper bail toward you. The paper advances to the print-start
position.
9. Push the paper bail away from you.
10. Move the paper rack to the fanfold paper position. For proper paper
flow, attach the paper rack down flat with the paper feeding under-
neath it into the printer.
11. Set the print head adjustment lever to the appropriate position.
If fanfold paper is loaded properly, it will enter between the body of
the printer and the paper rack. Once the paper is loaded and power is
on, check the PAPER OUT indicator on the front panel. If the PAPER OUT
indicator is lit, press the ON/OFF LINE button. If the PAPER OUT in-
dicator remains lit, the paper may be loaded incorrectly.
HINTS AND TIPS ON FANFOLD PAPER LOADING
* Be sure the paper is positioned so that it feeds through the printer
without binding.
* Do not let the printed paper pile on top of the unprinted paper. This
could jam the paper feed or damage the printer.
* When using fanfold paper, try to place the paper on the same level as
the printer.
USING THE PRINT HEAD ADJUSTMENT LEVER
The print head adjustment lever lets you adjust the gap between the print
head and platen for using various paper weights. Adjust the print head
according to the paper thickness variations, as described below. The
lever is located on the inside right of the printer.
SINGLE-PART FORMS--Push the lever forward to the third position.
MULTIPLE-PART FORMS--Pull the lever back to position 5 or 6.
If the gap between the print head and paper is too narrow, this can cause:
* Paper damage at the left of right margin.
* Inaccurate line feeding
* Ribbon to loosen or come off its guide during printing
If the gap between the print head and paper is too wide, this can cause:
* Light printing
* Missing characters
CAUTION: The print head must be as close to the platen as possible; other-
wise, damage to the print head can result.
If smudging occurs, set the print head adjustment lever to a higher sett-
ing by moving the lever toward the front of the printer.
