JP 500 (260-2950) Print Test Faxback Doc. # 3648

As soon as you have unpacked and installed your printer, run the print
test to check that it operates correctly.

The print test contains information on the printer firmware (release,
emulation and character generators) and the correct operation of the print
head nozzles.

Running the print test

Make sure that the print head is inserted and that there is paper in
    the paper input tray.

The print test is started from a printer-off condition.

Holding down the Form Feed key, switch on the printer. (Do not
release the key until the mechanical reset has been completed.)

A sheet of paper will be fed into the printer and the print test will
    be executed automatically.

Do not open the front cover of the printer while printing is in
progress, as this may cause the paper to jam.

To suspend the print test temporarily, press the On Line key (pressing
this key a second time will cause printing to resume). To abandon the
print test, switch the printer off.

Once the print test is completed and the last sheet of paper expelled, the
printer will go automatically into ON LINE condition.

Check the print quality of the test, making sure that all the characters
are clearly defined and complete.

If you have any problems running the print test, check that you have
followed the operating procedures correctly; if so, see the
    Troubleshooting Section.

Print test contents

Let us have a quick look at what has been printed.

the first line of the print test contains information on the printer
    status:

    - at the left hand margin: the resident emulation

    - at the right hand margin: the firmware name and release
(Rel. X. n.nn) and its date of issue.

the second line of the print test indicates the number of pages (NoP)
which have already been printed. When using batteries or a battery
pack, this number will give you an idea of the remaining operating
    automony.

the third line of print test (Print Head Test) allows you to check
whether any dots are missing. If there are, see the section entitled
PRIME Operation in - Maintenance and Troubleshooting - for the
possible solutions to this problem. Then repeat the print test.

The rest of the print test contains a print-out of the printer set-up
(default or user-selected operating parameters *) and the resident
fonts in portrait and/or landscape with all their attributes.

Once you have checked that your printer prints correctly, connect it to
your personal computer or host system.

In most cases, the operating parameters will be determined by your printer
driver, and will override the internal printer set up. If you wish to
modify your printer set up, see "Printer Programming" - in this manual.

Hexadecimal Print-Out

Hexadecimal printing is a diagnostic feature, commonly called "Hex-Dump",
which allows you to analyze all the bytes transferred from the host system
to the printer. Each byte is printed in its hexadecimal form, allowing
you to check the data codes transmitted.

Running a hexadecimal print-out

Make sure that the print head is inserted and that there is paper in
    the paper input tray.

the hexadecimal print-out is started from a printer-off condition.

Holding down the On Line key, switch on the printer. (Do not release
the key until the mechanical reset has been completed.)

Any data now transmitted to the printer will be printed in its hexadecimal
format (see example below); ESCAPE sequences are not executed.

To suspend the print-out temporarily, press the On Line key (pressing this
key a second time will cause printing to resume).

To exit from hexadecimal print-out mode, switch the printer off.

Once the data string has been transmitted to the printer, check it to see
that the hexadecimal codes printed correspond exactly to what you entered
on your computer/host system, and/or refer to your systems support center.

If you have any problems obtaining a hexadecimal print-out, check that you
have followed the operating procedures correctly; if so, see the
Troubleshooting Section
