2500 SX (250-4076) Adding Additional Drive Faxback Doc. # 1009 INSTALLING AN EXPANSION ADAPTER To install an expansion adapter, follow these steps: 1. Remove the screw from the expansion slot cover at the back of the computer. 2. Slide the metal slot cover out of an expansion slot. 3. With the mounting bracket at the back of the unit, carefully align and press the expansion adapter into the expansion slot and the expansion adapter guide. Be sure the expansion adapter is fully seated. 4. After the expansion adapter is fully seated, secure it with the screw you removed in Step 1. 5. Run the SetupSX utility, if necessary, to complete the installation. See "SetupSX" in the "Utilities" section for more information. INSTALLING ADDITIONAL DRIVES Your computer supports up to four storage devices. Three devices can be installed in drive bays, and a fourth can be installed in the expansion adapter area. The two upper bays support low-profile (maximum height, 1 inch) 3 1/2" devices. The lower bay supports either a half-height 5 1/4" device or a standard 3 1/2" device. A standard 3 1/2" device can be installed in the expansion adapter area. Installing a drive in the adapter area reduces the number of available adapter slots by one. To expand storage capacity, you can: * Install high-capacity or standard-capacity diskette drives in the 3 1/2" and/or 5 1/4" drive bays. The diskette drive connector in your computer supports up to two diskette drives. CAUTION: The computer is designed to support Tandy diskette drives only. Installing diskette drives from other manufacturers can damage the main logic board. * Install internal hard drives in the 3 1/2" bay, the 5 1/4" drive bay, or the expansion adapter area. The SmartDrive (IDE hard drive) connector in your computer supports up to two internal hard drives. To install a 3 1/2" hard drive in the 5 1/4" bay, you must install screws in the bottom of the drive. Some 3 1/2" hard drives do not have mounting holes on the bottom. These drives require a 3 1/2" to 5 1/4" Internal Disk Adapter (25-1076) and an L-bracket. You do NOT need this additional mounting hardware to install a SmartDrive. * Install disk or tape cartridge systems in the 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" drive bay. Plastic panels cover the openings of the 3 1/2" and 5 1/4" drive bays. Before installing a diskette drive, or other drive that accepts removable media, remove the appropriate panel as illustrated. * To remove the 3 1/2" panel, press down on the center tab from inside the cover. This panel is replaceable. * To remove the 5 1/4" panel, press down on the panel from outside the cover. This panel is not replaceable. If you are installing a hard drive that is not a SmartDrive (IDE), you will need to install an expansion adapter for the drive. Refer to the drive and adapter documentation for instructions. Follow the instructions in the drive installation guide. Some installations require additional mounting hardware. For example, you may need to purchase a 3 1/2" to 5 1/4" disk drive adapter and an L-bracket to install some 3 1/2" drives in the 5 1/4" bay. Mounting hardware is available at Radio Shack stores. INSTALLING A 3 1/2" DISKETTE DRIVE Use the following procedure to install a 3 1/2" diskette drive. Refer to the diskette drive installation guide for instructions on adjusting drive components, connecting the drive cable, and selecting mounting holes on the drive. 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 3 1/2" drive bay. 2. Select the appropriate mounting holes on the diskette drive. 3. Slide the drive into the 3 1/2" drive bay. With the drive resting on the center rail, align the mounting holes on the side of the carriage. 4. Mount the diskette drive in the bay by installing the four screws as illustrated. Remove the plastic card from the 5 1/4" bay. You will need to insert the screwdriver through the hole in the 5 1/4" bay to install one of the bottom screws. Remove the panel from the computer cover. The diskette drive will extend approximately 1/2" from the bay after installation. 5. Loosen the diskette drive cable connector from the cable attached to the factory-installed diskette drive. Pin 1 of the connector is labeled. Align Pin 1 of the cable connector with Pin 1 of the drive connector on the back of the diskette drive. Then, attach the cable connector to the drive connector. 6. Run the SetupSX utility to complete the installation. Refer to "SetupSX" in the "Utilities" section for more information. INSTALLING A 3 1/2" HARD DRIVE Use the following procedure to install a 3 1/2" hard drive. Refer to the drive installation guide for instructions on adjusting drive components, connecting the drive cable, and selecting mounting holes on the drive. You will also need information from the disk media error map or the drive installation guide to run SetupSX after installing the drive. Record this information on the system worksheet at the end of this manual. 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 3 1/2" drive bay. 2. Select the appropriate mounting holes one the drive. 3. Slide the drive into the 3 1/2" drive bay. With the drive resting on the center rail, align the mounting holes on the side of the drive with the two mounting holes on the side of the carriage. 4. Mount the drive in the bay by installing the screws as illustrated. 5. Attach the remaining cable connector to the SmartDrive connector on the main logic board. Attach a power cable from the computer power supply, if necessary. Refer to "Completing the SmartDrive Installation" for additional instructions. 6. Run the SetupSX utility to update your system configuration by identifying the drive. The setup configuration screen displays several drive descriptions. Select the drive description that matches the information you recorded on the worksheet. If you do not find an exact match, enter the drive type number, number of heads and cylinders, and head and cylinder numbers or defective tracks you recorded earlier. Refer to "SetupSX" in the "Utilities" section form more information. 7. Format the hard drive with the computer positioned as you plan to use it (either on its side or flat). Refer to "Completing the SmartDrive Installation" for additional information. CAUTION: After installing the hard drive, it might be necessary to park the drive heads before opening the carriage or moving the computer. Refer to the installation guide for information about securing drive heads. INSTALLING A 5 1/4" DRIVE Use the following procedure to install a 5 1/4" drive. Refer to the drive installation guide for instructions on adjusting drive components, connecting the cable, and selecting mounting holes on the drive. 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 5 1/4" drive bay in the carriage. 2. If you are installing a diskette drive, a tape drive, or a CD-ROM drive, remove the plastic card from thee bottom of the 5 1/4" bay and remove the panel from the computer cover. 3. Select the appropriate mounting holes for the drive. Refer to your drive installation guide. 4. Slide the drive into the bay. Align the appropriate mounting holes in the drive with the three mounting holes on the bottom of the carriage. 5. Mount the drive in the bottom of the carriage, using the screws included in your drive kit. 6. Connect the drive cable to the appropriate connector on the main logic board. Connect one of the power cables from the computer power supply to the power connector on the drive. INSTALLING A 3 1/2" DRIVE IN THE 5 1/4" BAY Refer to the drive installation guide for instructions on adjusting drive components, connecting the cable, and selecting mounting holes on the drive. NOTE: Drives without mounting holes on bottom require an L-bracket (MB-0136), available at Radio Shack stores, for this installation. 1. Open the computer to gain access to the 5 1/4" bay. 2. Install the drive in a 3 1/2" to 5 1/4" internal disk drive adapter (25-1076). Refer to the Internal Disk Drive Adapter installation guide for more information. Attach the drive cable to the device as directed. 1. Align the holes on the wider side of the L-bracket with the bottom set of holes on the drive adapter. Install the screws as illustrated: 2. Insert the drive, adapter, and L-bracket into the 5 1/4" bay. Use the three screws from the installation kit to mount the device as illustrated: 3. Attach the remaining cable connector to the appropriate connector on the main logic board. COMPLETING THE SMARTDRIVE INSTALLATION A SmartDrive (IDE hard disk drive) is a hard disk drive with a built-in controller. Because controller usually occupies an expansion slot, using a SmartDrive frees an expansion slot for some other use and saves you the cost of a separate controller, providing maximum performance and guaranteed compatibility at a lower cost than other drive/controller combinations. To install a SmartDrive: * Install the drive as described in "Installing a 3 1/2" Hard Drive". To install a 3 1/2" SmartDrive in the 5 1/4" bay, use the mounting holes on the bottom of the drive. Refer to "Installing a 3 1/2" Drive in the 5 1/4" Bay" for instructions. * Connect a SmartDrive data/controller cable between the SmartDrive and the 40-pin SmartDrive connector on the main logic board. The data/controller cable supports up to two SmartDrives. The SmartDrive cable and connector are keyed to ensure that they connect properly. * Connect a power cable from the power supply to the power connector on the hard drive. To connect an unkeyed IDE cable, align Pin 1 of the cable connector with Pin 1 of the main logic board connector and then press the cable connector onto the main logic board connector. Some cables have a stripe on one side, This stripe indicates Pin 1 one the cable connector. On the main logic board, a dot number 1 is printed next to Pin 1 of the main logic board connector. After installing a SmartDrive (or any hard disk drive), run the SetupSX utility to update your system configuration. To run SetupSX, insert MS-DOS Disk 1 into Drive A and turn on the computer. After you reset the computer, you must partition, high-level format, and set up MS-DOS 5.0 Setup program on Disk 1. You can do this by running the MS-DOS 5.0 Setup program on Disk 1. You can also use the fdisk and format commands to format and partition a hard disk. The MS-DOS 5.0 documentation (25-4177) is available at Radio Shack stores.
