VCDL Founder Supports Campus CCW: ...Van Cleave opened his presentation last night in fr ont of a giant screen on which was projected a PowerPoint opening with the words, "When seconds count between living or dying, the police are only minutes away.". That sentiment seemed to be echoed throughout his presentation, as Van Cleave made several more allusions and references that highlighted his apparent dissatisfaction with the performance of the police when it comes to providing safety to citizens. He summed up his thoughts on police protection with the phrase, "I'm responsible for my safety, the police will be my backup, but I'll protect myself." http://www.collegiatetimes.com/stories/2007/10/30/speaker_endorses_concealed_weapons --- Editing The Constitution?: Video of Brady Bunch legal director Dennis Henigan captures him accusing the DC Circuit Court of Appeals of editing the Constitution mere seconds after he edits "the right of the people" out of the Second Amendment. http://armedandsafe.blogspot.com/2007/10/forget-something-dennis.html --- Indiana Court Approves Firearm Lawsuit: In a landmark ruling with nationwide implications, the Indiana Court of Appeals today ruled that the City of Gary's lawsuit against gun manufacturers may proceed to trial. The 3-0 Court ruling held that the 2005 federal "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act" does not shield the gun industry from liability for irresponsible sales practices that funnel guns to the criminal market. Note - this is the verbiage of the Brady Bunch.) http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/news_press_release,210020.shtml --- California Sheriff Indicted: Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona has been indicted on federal corruption charges stemming from a lengthy investigation into allegations that he had misused his office for financial gain, law enforcement officials said Monday...His conduct had hurt the department's integrity and morale, according to the critics, who pointed in particular to allegations that he had issued badges and concealed-weapons permits to campaign contributors without background checks or ensuring that they had proper training. Carona denied that the badges were political favors and said his conduct was proper. (Carona has made Orange County about as close to shall-issue as California law allows.) http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-carona30oct30,0,7312574,full.story?coll=la-home-center --- Convicted Felon Nets Four Years For Ammo Possession: Emmett resident Russell Lee Tiner, 35, will serve 51 months in federal prison for unlawfully possessing 10 bullets. Tiner has multiple felony convictions, including a 1997 conviction for rape, which make him ineligible to possess firearms or ammunition. He was arrested Dec. 1, 2006, by the Emmett City Police Department after officers who knew that his driving privileges had been suspended saw him drive away from the location where they had finished interviewing him. After arresting him, officers found 10 bullets in his pocket. (I suspect that they were actually cartridges.) http://www.idahostatesman.com/westtv/story/196393.html --- Oops, Wrong Target: Allegheny County police are searching for two of the three suspects whose robbery earlier this month was interrupted by a gun-toting victim...Detectives said she and two men accosted a Wilkinsburg man at 9:41 p.m. Oct. 6 on Rebecca Street in Wilkinsburg. Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say 37-year-old James Harris was pheasant hunting with a group about three miles north of Grinnell when the accident happened. Officials say the group had shot a bird and when Harris went to retrieve it, he put his gun on the ground and crossed a fence. As he crossed the fence, hunting dogs stepped on his gun causing it to fire. (Rule Five says to maintain control of your firearm. Hunting rules say to lay your gun on the ground to cross a fence; however, I believe they also say not to chamber a round until you're prepared to fire.) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,305957,00.html --- Arizona Collector Teaches Firearm Safety: Just how many antique guns are in his collection is a "state secret," said Peter Stuyvesant Wainwright, but one little gun in the ample collection is as important as any. It is the 4-pound, 22-caliber undersized rifle he uses to demonstrate firearms safety to boys and girls in his classes for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts..."Guns don't do any harm by themselves, anymore than cars do," he said. "It takes a person with no knowledge to mishandle them. The Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms, but if you have a right, you also have a responsibility to learn to handle guns safely and properly." http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/hourlyupdate/208921.php --- Teen Skeet Shooter Concerned With Chances For College: The family of a teenage skeet shooter is complaining that school officials overreacted by suspending the girl for inadvertently leaving two unopened boxes of shotgun shells in her car when she drove to school. High school senior Kim Peters said she fears the punishment will cloud her permanent record as she applies to colleges. Her family is fighting the Dysart Unified School District to get the offense, possession of a "dangerous instrument," expunged. http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/208902 -- Stephen P.
