Technical Notes
===============

medialab is currently hosted on a Thinkpad T23 laptop dating back to
2001. It has 256MB of RAM, and 30GB of hard disk. It is connected to the
Internet through a DSL line, is attached to a custom-built UPS, and has
several powerful guardians keeping it safe from evil spirits.

The current hardware is much more powerful than the initial one, which
was nevertheless able to sustain several hundreds active users and to
act as an application server for half a dozen serial terminals and a few
network clients.

Users can access the programs and services available on medialab, but
they cannot get out on the Internet from within medialab. Hence, if you
are looking for a place to send spam from or to make an ssh tunnel,
please look somewhere else and avoid wasting yours and our time.

medialab users have their own ftp, web, and gopher space. Local email is
available, together with a local chat system (ALTOS CHAT) dating back to
1987.

-- UPDATE: we found two 512MB banks to upgrade medialab, so now it has an
           astronomical 1 GIGABYTE of RAM...
