Insane footage of Ukrainian anti-aircraft guns in Odesa confronting a
swarm of Russian drones

|Those tracers are only meant to be between every 5 or 10 rounds! That’s
|a lot of ammo!

  |u/logicblocks - 3 hours
  |
  |Why would one use tracers if it's automatic turrets?

    |u/Huy7aAms - 3 hours
    |
    |probably bc machine still requires visual information to correctly
    |adjust their gun. a difference by only 1 degree affects a lot at
    |such range

      |u/JamisonDouglas - 1 hour
      |
      |0.1 degrees over 1000m is 1.74 meters apart, so yeah it has a
      |really big impact.

        |u/onefst250r - 1 hour
        |
        |And that looks like its way the hell more than 1km.

          |u/12InchCunt - 1 hour
          |
          |The CIWS (naval version) calculates so that it fires the round
          |timed so that as the target hits 1 mile out it’s already being
          |hit by 20mm tungsten rounds. It also has to compensate for
          |the ship rocking

            |u/Lysol3435 - 1 hour
            |
            |I imagine the at CIWS is top-of-the line and expensive as
            |hell, though, right?

              |u/Thrommo - 1 hour
              |
              |CIWS is like "tank" its a generic term for an automated
              |naval hardkill defense system. on land its C-RAM (counter,
              |rocket, artillery, mortal) the most common american system
              |is a 20mm vulcan cannon connected to some radars. the
              |system is called the "Phalanx" its the R2D2 looking one.
              |some use missiles, some use 30mm or 40mm guns, it really
              |varries. the Phalanx costs 8-18 million dollars with 700
              |rounds of 20mm depleted uranium sabot at 30-80 dollars a
              |round

                |u/12InchCunt - 38 minutes
                |
                |I only knew enough to get my ESWS your explanation is
                |way better than I could do haha   But we used tungsten
                |sabot rounds

              |u/4_hammer - 1 hour
              |
              |Yeah those things are at least a few thousand dollars a
              |piece.

            |u/onefst250r - 38 minutes
            |
            |Yeah, I spent some time on a US navy ship. When they were
            |doing test fires of that thing (CIWS), no matter where you
            |were on the ship, you'd know it.

              |u/12InchCunt - 17 minutes
              |
              |The 76mm is fun too. Most ships’ “main gun” is a 5” which
              |can only fire 15-20 rounds per minute but 76mm is 80
              |rounds per minute. Being directly under it in the galley
              |or near it when it’s shooting is nuts

        |u/Admiral_Ballsack - 1 hour
        |
        |Are they flacks when they blow up?

          |u/Flintlocke89 - 45 minutes
          |
          |"Flak" is derived from the German word Flugabwehrkanone, Anti-
          |aircraft gun. Historically these have employed either timed,
          |barometric or proximity fuses but they are not mandatory.

          |u/ShackOfAllShades - 16 minutes
          |
          |Can’t speak for these guns but 30mm airburst ammo that gets
          |fed detonation range from a targeting system is what is most
          |common, such as germanys sky ranger system. Other systems for
          |dealing with larger aircraft have rounds that contain
          |proximity sensors that will arm within a distance bracket
          |designated by the rangefinder before launch

      |u/Gannondorfs_Medulla - 1 hour
      |
      |Reminds me of my buddy who drove a tank. He said when everything
      |is operating as it should, they can be driving 30MPH and put a
      |shell thru a bedroom window 6 miles away. Which, wow! Then he said
      |when they miss, they can be off by as much as a mile and a half.
      |Which, also wow!

        |u/MaxineTacoQueen - 1 hour
        |
        |My job for a short time was to pick up rounds from tanks that
        |had missed on practice ranges. (Because the officers of that
        |unit were convinced that they contained explosives for some
        |reason. but no biggie, I was on standby for the artillery range
        |down the road, anyway.) Two misses on the same target from the
        |same position was often a 20 minute walk between them. But
        |when it got to the 'burn up this extra ammo so we don't have to
        |do paperwork to return it' phase, I saw one tank hit 3/5 dead
        |center from half a mile while doing donuts and powerslides.

          |u/Gannondorfs_Medulla - 1 hour
          |
          |Doing donuts and powerslides in a tank while trying to blow up
          |a pile of unused ammo... I mean, what in the world can you do
          |that would qualify as fun after doing this?

            |u/7mm-08 - 1 hour
            |
            |You ever done donuts and powerslides in a tank while trying
            |to blow up a pile of unused ammo......[on
            |weeeeed?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkA9rz-1YoA)

        |u/nordic-nomad - 1 hour
        |
        |Yeah, there’s a reason the ranges for certain weapons systems
        |are larger than some states.

        |u/bearrosaurus - 1 hour
        |
        |> Then he said when they miss, they can be off by as much as a

      |u/A_Finite_Element - 1 hour
      |
      |Was going to say this also, it's a way of possibly detecting some
      |major miscalibration. Not that I think it would make a big
      |difference in this kind of scenario where they're engaging a lot
      |of targets with a lot of fire, but as a more general principle it
      |can be good to thing to help a human in the loop identify a
      |problem. Also, tracers don't hurt in this scenario -- they're kind
      |of like the other rounds and not vastly more expensive so go with
      |a standard distribution of them.

    |u/DialUp_UA - 3 hours
    |
    |Because there is still a gunner who aims the turret.

      |u/terminalavocent - 14 minutes
      |
      |Not for a radar-guided gun.

    |u/Alikont - 3 hours
    |
    |They aren't automatic turrets, those are plain old machineguns.

      |u/GoldenMegaStaff - 1 hour
      |
      |Seems like flak guns might be just as effective - if not more so -
      |against these targets.

        |u/GrannyGumjobs13 - 1 hour
        |
        |They have Gepards out there. It’s basically a cold war era flak
        |gun. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flakpanzer_Gepard

          |u/leberwrust - 43 minutes
          |
          |They have a ton of stuff. They don't have many gepards. Many
          |are just trucks with whatever machine gun was laying around
          |bolted to them.

            |u/GrannyGumjobs13 - 26 minutes
            |
            |Yea it’s a mix of a ton of different AA from all sorts of
            |countries

        |u/EventAccomplished976 - 46 minutes
        |
        |Pet peeve, but „flak gun“ is redundant. The acronym flak stands
        |for „Flugabwehrkanone“, which already includes the cannon/gun
        |part. „Flak gun“ means literally „antiaircraft cannon gun“.

    |u/Reddog1999 - 2 hours
    |
    |Automatic turrets? This is not radar guided fire for sure, they are
    |probably just heavy machine guns and auto cannons

    |u/proxy69 - 3 hours
    |
    |That’s a great question actually

      |u/sketch-3ngineer - 3 hours
      |
      |Auto but manned.

      |u/LotharVonPittinsberg - 1 hour
      |
      |IIRC, it's standard loading for both automated defences and manned
      |defences. Serves more of a purpose for manned guns, but for
      |automated it is used for troubleshooting (hah) guidance systems
      |and as an indicator for what direction the troops need to be
      |paying attention to.

  |u/Lucius-Halthier - 23 minutes
  |
  |I truly hope the administration change won’t force the Ukrainians to
  |surrender, they need more support now more than ever

    |u/WhatDoADC - 14 minutes
    |
    |Putin is Trump's daddy. Trump isn't going to send Ukraine anymore
    |support

  |u/hectorxander - 2 hours
  |
  |Yeah I think ww2 planes it was every 8th had some kind of sulphur
  |thing as a tracer.  A river of lead from anti aircraft guns.

    |u/pppjurac - 59 minutes
    |
    |ww2 was one in four rounds as tracer nato uses strontium nitrate /
    |peroxide and magnesium russia uses barium salts instead of
    |strontium

  |u/jebadiahstone123 - 2 hours
  |
  |I don’t see any target strikes. Did they hit anything?

    |u/ADHD-Fens - 2 hours
    |
    |As a physicist I can confirm they hit the ground. Not sure about
    |anything before then.

      |u/EspectroDK - 1 hour
      |
      |As a non-physicist, I can confirm they also hit the main body of
      |water also depicted in the video.

        |u/ADHD-Fens - 36 minutes
        |
        |oh and definitely the atmosphere.

    |u/Turing_Testes - 1 hour
    |
    |What are you expecting to see? If it's a drone swarm it's not like
    |there's going to be explosions. Just small objects getting broken
    |apart in the sky.

      |u/Hot_Ambition_6457 - 1 hour
      |
      |Yes drones are small and light enough, without enough fuel on
      |board to cause a visible fireball. They're just getting wings
      |ripped off and falling down. Of course you can't see that from
      |miles away.

    |screen before hitting the ground and exploding.

    |u/Insolator - 1 hour
    |
    |Looks like something got hit right near the end.. Streaks left to
    |right then detonates.

  |u/Standard_Gas6695 - 2 hours
  |
  |Depends on the weapon system, .50 cal and under typically run belts
  |with 1 tracer every 4 rounds (uncertain if this is standard for air
  |defense belts). Larger systems (20mm+) might run ammo that is a tracer
  |every round.

|u/Warm-Exercise6880 - 3 hours
|
|I can't imagine that being a daily part of life. It's insane.

  |u/vingeran - 3 hours

    |u/notqualitystreet - 2 hours

    |Reminds me of Second World War AA footage. Couldn’t tell the colour
    |of the tracers in those though. Unreal to see it like this.

      |
      |They had this tech in WW2??

        |u/Farados55 - 1 hour

      |In their defence, the depiction of weapons fire in Star Wars was
      |heavily inspired (as were many other elements) by WW2 imagery,
      |including scenes like this involving large volumes of tracer fire.

      |The primary contributor cutting all federal aid to the allied
      |country you have been heavily supporting during a war effort, or
      |trying to convince that ally to sign a treaty heavily not in their
      |favor, are both ways that is fairly equal to getting the country
      |to surrender to their enemy. Trump has already begun talks to try
      |and do both of those things. I see this as conclusive enough that
      |he prefers to see Ukraine lose, and if they lose then Russia is
      |going to have a field day sucking as much of Ukraine back into
      |their control. The other commenter is therefore pretty much right.

      |u/Tuscanlord - 51 minutes

  |dark, but video game material

    |u/Bogtear - 2 hours
    |
    |This reminds me of another video of a ukrainian tank assaulting a
    |russian trench, The top comment was something like "why aren't they
    |using anti-tank"... I was wondering if they were watching the same
    |video. But then I was playing the tutorial to battlefied 2042, and
    |driving that cartoon tank around with a main cannon that can't
    |destroy a glass door and a coax machinegun that apparently shoots
    |nerf darts and I got where that commenter was coming from. If this
    |is your reference for what a tank is, then yeah of course just "use
    |anti-tank" makes sense. I think many people who play military
    |themed first person shooters do not recognize what an unbelievably
    |massive distortion of modern heavy weaponry they are. Like the coax
    |machinegun on a tank in the real world is a 20mm cannon. I think.
    |The idea of exposing yourself for even a moment to aim and fire a
    |rocket at a tank shooting gigantic guns at you is ludicrous. When
    |infantry catch tank crews by surprise, then yeah ambushing with
    |rockets works great. When the tank knows where you are, very
    |different story. And in the video, the Russians do try to hit it
    |with rockets. The miss, twice. Possibly because being shot at with
    |a 105mm main gun, 20mm machine gun and a 50 cal makes you either
    |very terrified or very dead.

      |u/LamyT10 - 1 hour
      |
      |Fighting a tank in some shooters is also very hard. The difference
      |is that if you fail, you respawn a view seconds later, so you can
      |risk it. But people irl don’t respawn and I would never face a
      |tank irl if hiding was an option.

    |It's scary how detached from reality our video game/smart
    |phone/Internet generation is. All they can think about is how real
    |fucking war looks like a video game. No, real war is fucked up and
    |bloody and people try to make video games about it because it's
    |"cool" My father in law was in Vietnam and he couldn't understand
    |why people would want to play war simulators. It didn't make sense
    |to him.

      |
      |We come from many centuries of violence, it didn't just start in
      |the last few decades. Being able to associate that media does a
      |good job portraying war, when we see videos from an actual war,
      |isn't detachment from reality. Why do you think people dress up
      |like civil war soldiers and go to an open field with old guns and
      |pretend to shoot eachother? They think its fun to re-enact. No
      |different than old war films or cowboy westerns, those things
      |existed well before the "internet generation" and showcase a very
      |real and violent existence. My Grandpa served in Vietnam also and
      |he talks about it like he was proud to be there and do what they
      |did. Sadly not everyone who goes to fight in a war is a good
      |person just doing what they can to help, sometimes they enjoy what
      |they do and they continue to be violent after they get back home.
      |Constant violence desensitizes people so its not surprising that
      |the generation you speak of being "weirded out by this internet
      |generation playing war games" was the same generation that
      |continued to pushed the violence narrative further because of what
      |the previous generations did without the help of the internet.

        |I learned real quick from my time fighting in Iraq that you
        |could have 5 guys in a humvee all go through the same traumatic
        |event and they'd all come out of it with 5 very unique
        |reactions. Now each one could go through another 4 but similar
        |events on their own and be totally fine until one just mentally
        |hits them the wrong way. Fine Fine Fine Fine FUCKED UP
        |I made it through Iraq just fine mentally and event went into a
        |career that gave me first hand experiences with a variety of
        |traumatic events. I was fine until one day my assignment hit me
        |wrong and the next morning I suddenly found myself collapsed on

    |u/HammerTh_1701 - 2 hours
    |
    |That's exactly the problem of AA. At those distances, you still
    |gotta lead your shots and predict the movement of your target which
    |is why it usually is computer-controlled with the help of radar
    |these days.

      |u/TheMightyTriceratop - 59 minutes

      |Yeah I was gonna say it’s exactly like watching an airplane fly
      |across the sky, it looks slow buts it’s easily flying 500+ mph

    |u/nitefang - 2 hours
    |
    |So im not a ballistics expert or anything but if you are saying the
    |tracers seem to be moving slowly, I don’t think that is the case.
    |For one thing, the way tracers work is that they glow and leave a
    |streak behind where the bullet actually is. Combine that with the
    |distance and it will appear to be moving slowly but is really moving
    |just as fast as a bullet. Just like how an airplane high up in the
    |sky appears to be moving slowly but if it were 10 feet off the
    |ground it would be obvious it was going 500mph. I may have
    |misunderstood exactly what you were talking about but to my
    |knowledge, tracer rounds fly just as fast as non-tracers and machine
    |guns don’t pack ammo that flies slower to shoot at drones. The only
    |way I know of to slow down a bullet would be to pack less powder
    |which will lead to all sorts of other issues and I’m not aware of
    |this ever being done. But maybe you meant something else like
    |there were fewer bursts or it didn’t seem like the “lines” of rounds
    |were moving to aim at different targets very quickly?

    |u/hectorxander - 2 hours
    |
    |Do the tracers fly slower than the bullets?  I know in ww2 tracers
    |used sulphur but not sure how they were constructed or how
    |accurately the tracers followed the same path as bullets?

      |u/psi- - 2 hours
      |
      |I only shot tracers at 300m range and they hit the target about as
      |well as normal rounds (in the limits of the gun, Valmet KvKK 62),
      |could easily raze a group 3 wide.

      |u/Strange-Ask-739 - 2 hours
      |
      |Tracers are specifically designed to mirror the ballistics of the
      |other rounds in the belt.    Not perfect, but they do try.

      |u/koolaidsocietyleader - 2 hours
      |
      |From the wikipedia, they say tracer rounds are either for the
      |shooter to quickly ajust for the trajectory of the bullet or to
      |indicate to others where to shoot. If they are meant to ajust for
      |the trajectory they would need to have the same balistic
      |properties of the other bullet. Since those are robots firing, I
      |would guess it is their way of calibrating as they fire to adapt
      |for changing conditions (wind, rain, air drag and probably other
      |variables).

  |u/Lomotograph - 1 hour

  |
  |I see this get repeated constantly, and for any given video there is
  |like a 10% chance it is true. Tracer ratios vary greatly, even
  |between different equipment in the same military. The "every fifth
  |round is a tracer" comes from American naval CIWS systems, but isn't
  |even true for U.S ground based CIWS. In any of those videos of C-RAMs
  |defending U.S airbases, every single round is a tracer. I don't know
  |what the ratios are for Ukraine hardware, but there is a good chance
  |there is a great deal of variation for unit to unit just within what
  |you see in this video.

|u/AsABlackManPlus - 1 hour

  |
  |Those are anti aircraft shells, they are on a timer and explode in the

|question is, how effective is this?

  |u/candidM - 1 hour
  |
  |Usually it’s somewhat effective. Drones they are fighting against are
  |relatively big and slow. They can easily be critically damaged by
  |regular machine gun (and fall on some random place/house). In this
  |particular case the biggest problem was low clouds which obscured
  |view.

|Maybe the answer to drone swarms is swarms of hunter-killer drones, not

|Why don't they do this on every new year's eve? 🤔

|u/Shmuckatellee - 36 minutes
|
|Dumb question - how do they know where to shoot? Do the operators have
|some sort of vision on the target or is there a radar + target lock
|thing going on?

|Using that word as an adjective to describe anything other than mental
|illness telegraphs your immaturity.

|The unfortunate thing about the "Don't take videos or photos of air
|defense" rule is that we don't see insane footage like this very often,
|it is really shocking to see. Shame it can't be on international news.

|War is so freaking stupid and wasteful. Multi-millions of dollars wasted
|there, on both sides. We should literally tar and feather any "leader"
|who forces this kind of conflict.

|u/pouriaarab - 30 minutes
|
|The video is too short. It would be much better if it show the target
|gets hit

|u/smiler5672 - 30 minutes
|
|Idk why but seeing active anti air installations in cities makes me
|realize more about how bad war is way more than seeing videos of ppl
|dying in the conflict (If half of what i wrote dosent make sense

|How big are these drones? Why use bullets against a tiny moving target?
|I presume they have to have rotors... Why not launch a net with like a
|T-shirt canon kind of thing or something to tangle the propellers and
|take them down that way? Serious question

|u/Khevhig - 27 minutes

|And these are big rounds as well! The neighbors are going to be pissed!
|Fuck, this war has sent me high and low. Its the best and the worst of

|u/One-Location-6454 - 24 minutes

|Absolutely insane video.  My thought when watching it, beyond the 'holy
|shit' feeling, was surely we can come up with a more cost effective
|method of dealing with drones.  The amount of cash they just spent to
|take out drones is crazy.
