A young man trying to rob an old taxi driver

|He wasn't having any of the bullshit. "You gonna shoot me? Get the fuck
|out of here."

  |u/Wulfrank - 6 hours
  |
  |Calling his bluff was a huge gamble. I once read of a homicide where
  |the victim's last words were "What're you gonna do, shoot me?"

    |u/Raging-Badger - 6 hours
    |
    |Bro’s “ex military” makes me think his thought process was “if you

      |What the fuck I thought this kinda stuff only happened in south
      |America It's wild to think that there's this possibility that
      |one day, you life will just end because some MF decides to 'just'
      |shoot you in the head... for no reason

        |u/CalligrapherOwn6333 - 4 hours
        |
        |I mean it can get much worse. There was a mentally ill man in
        |Montreal who got a hold of a gun and started executing people on
        |the street. They got him after the third one. It was my first
        |year up here and I remember thinking, wait, that's not supposed
        |to happen in Canada, what the fuck?
        |([source](https://www.coastreporter.net/national-news/suspect-

        |u/Evatog - 3 hours
        |
        |Statistically speaking, you are more likely to get struck by
        |lightning than get randomly shot in the head in the US. unless
        |you are in a gang, regularly interacting with gangs, or a kid in
        |school.

          |u/Definitely_nota_fish - 32 minutes
          |
          |That third one is actually extremely depressing if it is true

            |u/Evatog - 29 minutes
            |
            |It is true that school faring children are statistically one
            |of the highest at risk groups for being shot in the past
            |decade. Outside of gang related crime in a few very small
            |areas, not a whole lot of people actually get shot. At least
            |not from a specific group.

              |u/Definitely_nota_fish - 27 minutes
              |
              |That's just sad. The fact that A nation does basically
              |nothing when kids are more likely to be shot than adults.
              |If that isn't a crisis, I don't know what is

    |u/Merry_Dankmas - 4 hours

    |My buddy's grandpa had a similar bluff calling incident a while
    |back. He's the stereotypical angry new Yorker. Biggest asshole I've
    |ever met in my life. He said some time back in the 90s, a guy tried
    |to rob him in the Keys. According to him, he just went off on this
    |dude and verbally crucified him. He called him every name, slur,
    |offense, belittlement and nasty word you can imagine. Dude just
    |absolutely laid into him and demeaned him in the most belittling way
    |possible. The robber guy tried to interject but grandpa cut him off
    |and kept going. His notable phrase of the whole ordeal was "Youre
    |gonna have to stab me or suck my balls". Apparently the guy got
    |tired of it and left. Gramps let some cops know but he doesnt know
    |if they ever found the guy. The worst part though is he didn't
    |actually know what was gonna happen. He didn't think the guy was
    |full of shit. He was just really pissed off and lost his temper.
    |Could have ended very poorly. Now, did this actually happen? Idk,
    |it was only him so I can only take his word for it. But the guy is a
    |raging prick and the story is very in line with how he behaves so I
    |can believe it.

  |u/Mean-Abies3819 - 4 hours
  |
  |My first thought was “that man has seen some shit”. The kinds of
  |things normal people have nightmares about.

  |u/bentheone - 3 hours
  |
  |I did that once. I said "what are you gonna do ? Stab me ?" To a knife
  |waggling banger I exposed trying to pass sugar for heroin. It was
  |right smack in the middle of the worst neighborhood, in front of at
  |least another 20 assholes. I was just out of the office, carrying my
  |computer case and all. I realized what I did the day after.
  |Addictions make your brain tell you that kind of shit is okay.

|u/Just-Some-Person530 - 7 hours
|
|“Digital world bro.” Lol.

  |u/OnceMoreAndAgain - 5 hours
  |
  |Reminds me of a scene from The Sopranos in one of the later seasons.
  |In the early seasons, the Sopranos mob would force all the mom & pop
  |small businesses to pay "taxes" or w/e to the mob as a cost of the
  |mob's "protection". You know, the classic mob hustle. Well, in one of
  |the later seasons two guys from the mob go into a Starbucks and try to
  |intimidate the manager into paying these "taxes". The manager is some
  |22 year old looking guy who basically says "look, I know what you're
  |trying to do here, but this is a franchise, man. the corporate office
  |will notice if any money is missing and they'll just fire me and
  |someone new will come in who won't know about this arrangement". And
  |the mob guys are like "shit... well, fuck... our thing doesn't work
  |with Starbucks then... what the hell is the world coming to?" Kinda
  |funny to think how the mob's strategy doesn't work on these big
  |franchises since there's no one in any of the stores with any real
  |power to give the franchise's money to the mob. It's so de-
  |centralized. Edit: Here's the scene:
  |https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gsz7Gu6agA One of the most poignant
  |scenes in the whole show imo even though it's not a significant scene
  |to the plot of the show.

    |u/Time_for_Stories - 3 hours
    |
    |I live in Thailand and I remember 20 years ago the popular tourist
    |islands were all mafia-run. Everything overcharged an insane amount,
    |there was a taxi mafia, a convenience store mafia, basically
    |anything that could milk money from tourists had some mafia
    |involvement. Then around 10 years ago all the big chains started
    |opening up and they tried getting into those too. But the people who
    |own these chains are the massive local conglomerates who just
    |licensed the brands from abroad, they are very politically connected
    |and flooded the island with military for a few years. Handguns don't
    |do much against tanks and body armor. So that's how 7-11 took down
    |the mafia

      |u/m0d3rm0d3m3t - 2 hours
      |
      |But did the mafia just close shop? or did they move on to some
      |other form of businesses? Which island BTW?

        |u/Time_for_Stories - 50 minutes
        |
        |The issue was more that it’s already difficult for a normal mom
        |and pop shop and compete with the big box retailers. If you need
        |to pay protection money on top of that then you’re just
        |underwater. So people just refused to pay the mafia since they
        |didn’t have any money and the mafia can’t extort money from
        |people if they don’t have any.

    |u/fundraiser - 5 hours
    |
    |good post. patsy's brother, whatever happened there.

      |u/MadGrimSniper - 5 hours
      |
      |Whatever happened there?! I’ll tell you what happened there!

      |u/stop-mumbling-idiot - 4 hours
      |
      |That animal, Gigi

    |u/IntlPartyKing - 4 hours
    |
    |it's so centralized, not de-centralized, right?

      |u/OnceMoreAndAgain - 4 hours
      |
      |De-centralized, because there are so many Starbucks stores that
      |Starbucks doesn't give a shit if something happens to one of them.
      |Meanwhile, a mom & pop shop cannot afford to "sacrifice" their
      |store, because they only have one store. The entirety of a mom &
      |pop store is one location. The entirety of Starbucks is spread out
      |across a huge number of locations and no one location is
      |important.

        |u/IntlPartyKing - 4 hours
        |
        |not the way "de-centralized" is usually used, but I
        |gotcha...thanks for clarifying

    |u/Just-Some-Person530 - 5 hours
    |
    |Never watched the show (don’t hate) but I get what you’re saying
    |here. It’s like dinosaurs meeting cavemen. A whole lot of “wtf and
    |well, fuck.

        |Metaphorical bro. I know my timelines. There was fire then cold
        |then Jesus dogs (dinosaurs) then monkey men then Jesus then we
        |devolved back into monkey men flinging poo but still look like
        |Jesus people.

          |Yeah, just never know who's reading it.

    |u/brwhyan - 4 hours
    |
    |great post. but I want to say it's very centralized, not de-
    |centralized. Just not centralized at a level that this mob can be
    |effective.

    |u/CitizenPremier - 4 hours
    |
    |"It's over for the little guy" kinda also sounds like a comment on
    |the end of ma-and-pa shops. Not that gangsters ever did anything to
    |help them, they just regret not being able to bully big
    |corporations...

  |This is why you never underestimate the elderly. Wisdom over youth any

          |Real as the WWE

      |u/Hot_Angle_9835 - 1 hour
      |
      |Tyson walked away with a big ass bag of cash for 16 minutes of
      |work. I'd say that was one of the smartest moves a 58 year old
      |could've made.

    |u/Just-Some-Person530 - 6 hours
    |
    |Elderly lol. Dude is like 6 years older than me and I’m in my prime.
    |Not really but he is closer to my age than yours I imagine

    |u/CitizenPremier - 4 hours
    |
    |The dude is like 55 and you're all "wow, he knows about credit
    |cards" lmao

    |u/green_gold_purple - 5 hours
    |
    |For real. So sick of “boomer” ageism. Humanity has survived on the
    |experience and wisdom of elders. There’s just as much unwarranted
    |hubris from young people as there is ignorance from those that can’t
    |learn and evolve. It’s almost like old and new knowledge are both
    |valuable and necessary.

      |u/Flabbergash - 1 hour
      |
      |Maybe because young people have been vilified and shit on and shot
      |down their entire lives

        |u/Drengi36 - 44 minutes
        |
        |Rince and repeat for every generation since time began.

      |u/Prophayne_ - 2 hours
      |
      |I typically would have agreed, but our elders let us down in that
      |regard. Every generation one was very "children are the future"
      |centric, believed in schools, in kids getting fed. Neighbors
      |helping one another. Now? Wisdoms all gone. The only advice you
      |get from the elderly here is how to be afraid of people of a
      |different skin color, how to be afraid of technology and the
      |future (unless it makes old people rich), and don't try to put
      |children or the world before any stock prices, so help the lord in
      |heaven. The hubris of youth will never change, everyone thinks
      |they know better than everyone. Usually there was a tempered voice
      |having already dealt with the trials and tribulations of life to
      |restrain that hubris. Now all of the voices are full of hubris and
      |pride. Not a drop of wisdom left.

    |u/Calm-Explanation-192 - 3 hours
    |
    |omg you think the driver is elderly? lmao. not quite.

  |u/spider-venomized - 6 hours
  |
  |hilarious when it's the old teaching the young

    |u/Radefa1k - 5 hours
    |
    |Isn't that how it always is? Most teachers are older than their
    |students and so on

      |u/cIumsythumbs - 5 hours
      |
      |Kids teach you a LOT. And self-reflection is only part of it. A
      |kid with a special interest or hobby will learn that shit inside
      |out and gleefully share it with you.

      |u/jx2002 - 5 hours
      |
      |Seriously, how is this funny? Like, if your teacher is younger
      |than you, you should be concerned. Not always, blah blah
      |exceptions, but I def want someone older/wiser than me teaching me
      |basically _anything_ I don't already know

    |u/Just-Some-Person530 - 6 hours
    |
    |He should’ve roasted the shit out of him. He should’ve been like
    |“you coming at me with your 1972 ass stick ‘em up ass motherfucking
    |bullshit? Get the fuck out of my car.“

|u/BBQGUY50 - 6 hours
|
|I am an uber driver I have a dummy wallet with 20 dollars and old credit
|cards. The kicker it also has a tag on it so I can see it on my find my
|phone app. Armed robbery (all on camera) say goodbye to your freedom
|for 5-10 years

  |u/biggysharky - 6 hours
  |
  |I remember watching one of these SAS survivor show ages ago, one of
  |the tips he gave when travelling abroad is to have a dummy wallet with
  |expired cards in it and a wad of useless paper money in, if you get
  |jacked throw the wallet at them and bail. They won't go through the
  |wallet and verify the contents, to them it looks like they hit the
  |jackpot.

    |u/Four-Triangles - 6 hours
    |
    |When I lived abroad I had a special bank account and atm card for
    |police bribes/tickets. They’ll say you can pay the fine right now
    |and take you to get money and guess what, that’s not as much as the
    |fine, but it’s close, and they’ll take it. So $200 for emergencies
    |in that account so I can protect the rest of my money.

      |u/mlstdrag0n - 6 hours
      |
      |Jebus where do you travel to?

        |u/I_PING_8-8-8-8 - 5 hours
        |
        |This is very common in the Philippines where police sometimes
        |wait 4 months before they get their wages.

          |u/mlstdrag0n - 5 hours
          |
          |Are those the guys walking around with assault rifles? Or is
          |that private security?

            |u/I_PING_8-8-8-8 - 4 hours
            |
            |No just LTO or road police with speedguns. They are only
            |around big cities, as most smaller cities would never make
            |budget for speedguns. Also traffic enforcers paid by the
            |city will stop you for making a illegal u turn and try to
            |score money. Because the city never pays them on time. The
            |entire country if you are rich, there are no rules just
            |inconvenience... you can pay your way out of almost anything
            |and you don't even have to try to bribe them ... they
            |suggest it. (And any retired fat old American with a 1000
            |dollars of pension money a month is rich here compared to
            |making 8 dollars a day ...) And knowing their financial
            |situation I can't blame them, they are just providing for
            |their families. The guys walking around with assault
            |rifles is al para military, counter terrorism. They are
            |absolutely essential here. Those checkpoints plus drone
            |surveillance has made us much safer from mword terrorists
            |then 10 years ago. They get paid on time and make relatively
            |descent money. . But they mix with regular army so much that
            |you can't really call them paramilitary anymore. The police
            |also has counter terrorism unit.

              |u/Romanopapa - 4 hours
              |
              |Police units, specially on checkpoints, do carry rifles
              |and not just military. Even their uniforms are “military”
              |style already.

            |u/krazye87 - 4 hours
            |
            |In Phillipines they usually have shotguns lol.

              |
              |The security guards in front of shopping malls and banks
              |yeah, we where talking about the armed man at all the road
              |checkpoints.

          |u/Visible_Owl_8842 - 3 hours
          |
          |Can confirm. I was in a city (Makati) that I didn't really
          |frequent. Got pulled over for running a left turn red light at
          |an intersection (the left turn stoplight was WELL hidden) and
          |a couple of enforcers were already waiting for me as soon as I
          |turned left. So this was a common spot for them to pull over
          |people. They were telling me that it would be Php 3,500
          |(~$60) in fines and a seminar. Both are completely made up,
          |but the ticket itself would set me back because the next time
          |my license was renewed, they would give me a 5 year license
          |instead of a 10 year one. OR, as the enforcer said it, I

                |These enforcers basically work on commission, although
                |it probably technically exists I don't think they even
                |have printed tickets with them at all. The cities all
                |know this as well. It's a let's-all-not-talk about it
                |situation. Still they have to be careful because they
                |can get ratted out, if a citizen makes a video of such
                |an encounter the city has no choice but to fire and
                |charge them even if they don't want to and are entirely
                |okay with not prioritizing the payment of their wages.
                |You'd think that the city would mis a lot of income from
                |fines this way but apparently it's not like that there.
                |When I first came to the Philippines I made an illegal
                |turn with my car and was stopped but my wife was not
                |with me, and the guy did not speak English. I showed him
                |my Canadian driver's license and he just did not know
                |what to do next as we could not communicate. So after a

          |Absolute agree. When you're just trying to go about your daily
          |life and all of a sudden there's someone threatening to shoot
          |a person, freezing is nothing be ashamed of. It's an innate
          |response. Fight/flight/freeze/fawn and you don't get to

            |Also some dude having to cancel his cards and have them
            |reissued is pretty minor compared to someone dying. I don't
            |understand people's willingness to die over something so
            |minor as replacing a bit of plastic or, in the worst case,
            |having to dispute some charges on their credit card that

              |Yeah, unless I'm carrying my life savings with me, I'd
              |never resist a robbery, even if I'm carrying a gun on me
              |and could fight back. It's never worth it, my life is more
              |important than whatever few hundred I might have on me.
              |Sure, it'd be a cool story to tell at the bar if I managed
              |to be an action movie hero and somehow shot him first.
              |That's likely not gonna happen though, what usually
              |happens is you reach for your waist and get shot within
              |half a second.

        |There really is no hero move in this situation. If you're armed
        |you can put it to the kids head but he might panic and shoot the
        |driver. If you're unarmed, the best thing you can do is not
        |antagonize the situation. You're not wrestling the gun away
        |from him from the backseat and that has a high probability of
        |causing him to accidentally pull the trigger bc I'm guessing

          |Try saying that when those couple of bucks are supposed to buy
          |the only non-stolen food you can have for a week. I stood up
          |to a mugger once. I had no choice, because I was broke. He
          |turned out to be a coward.

            |u/Anzai - 35 minutes
            |
            |Fair enough. And I actually have stood up to three guys who
            |jumped me in Addis Ababa, trying to steal my bag and drag me
            |into a closed down street market. I probably could have
            |just given them the bag and run, but I didn’t, and managed
            |to just do the psycho macho routine to scare them off. To
            |be fair, they were all high as shit on huffing glue or
            |something, and I didn’t see any weapons, but there were
            |three of them and it was pitch black, nobody around near
            |midnight. Adrenaline kicked in and fight or flight follows.
            |I picked fight that time also, but only because I didn’t
            |think flight would work. So I guess you’re right, you never
            |really know until it happens what you’ll actually do,
            |regardless of what you might logically think you’d do if you
            |imagined that same situation.

                |
                |I’m definitely not badass. I was shitting myself, but I
                |knew that showing that would make me a target so I just
                |acted like I knew how to fight and did it all the time.
                |Like I was relishing the chance, and not about to wet
                |myself! It worked, but I can’t fight, and if they
                |weren’t all twitchy and drugged up it probably wouldn’t
                |have. I just got lucky. In London actually I also got
                |mugged, and it didn’t go nearly as well. And against my
                |own advice, I tried to hold onto my bag again, so I
                |really don’t practice what I preach! This Irish
                |traveller guy, who I had bought several beers for
                |throughout the night and chatted to for about an hour,
                |when he was leaving said ‘and I’m taking your bag with
                |me’. I thought he was joking, cause we’d been friendly
                |for a while, but he tried to take it and I hooked my
                |arms through it when I saw he was serious. I was sitting
                |and he was standing, and he hit me five times real fast
                |in the face when I couldn’t protect myself, knocked out
                |a tooth and made me lose consciousness. No way the fake
                |tough guy routine would have worked on him. He was a
                |bare knuckle boxer for money, his knuckles were all
                |scabbed up. I knew he was dodgy but there were also
                |hundreds of people around in Trafalgar Square so I
                |didn’t think he’d try something. So I lost my bag,
                |iPod, a tooth and consciousness. Probably should have
                |just given it up in that case!

    |I genuinely can’t believe these reactions sometimes complaining
    |about doing nothing. I see it constantly these days. The dude in
    |the back is a normal guy that maybe has a desk job. What do you
    |want him to do? Sometimes being as non reactive as possible so you
    |don’t escalate the situation is the best solution. Everyone knows
    |how dumb it is to tell a normal person to “calm down”, now imagine
    |trying to disarm a person with a gun. Most people who commit crimes
    |(particularly in terms of robbery) are scared/desperate as well.
    |It’s very rare to get a psychopath that just wants to inflict harm.
    |From what I can tell it’s backing that scared person in a corner
    |that typically instigates the violence when they have a weapon.

      |u/Prestigious-Flower54 - 4 hours
      |
      |It's main character syndrome combined with that American cowboy
      |dream. Everyone wants to think they could grab the kid one armed
      |then when the kid went to use the gun they would twist it out of
      |his hand and turn it on him till the cops showed up. Then they
      |would be in the news and maybe get a medal. The reality would be
      |two people with bullet wounds and a kid with a gun running. This
      |is gonna sound boomer as fuck but it really is action movies and
      |video games giving people this false sense of their ability to
      |deal with these types of scenarios.

      |u/SV_Essia - 3 hours
      |
      |Agreed. It also depends on how far the situation has escalated.
      |Like, some people are getting assaulted, potentially
      |injured/killed in front of you, the situation can be desperate
      |enough that you have to do something, regardless of the risks
      |involved. But in this situation? I'd 100% expect the driver to

  |this dude strapped who knows where the bullets start flying.

    |IA. Everyone knows taxi don't have money anymore because of those

|Looks cool here -- but I saw another video from one of those self-
|defense YouTube channels where some stubborn taxi driver in Brazil (or
|some other Central/South American country) tried to play the tough guy
|and refused to give the robber what he wanted (his smartphone, in this
|case). The robber stabbed the living fuck out of his face, neck, torso,
|dozens of times (all visible on the taxi dashcam), and the guy died of
|his injuries. He didn't die right away though. He'd stab him a few
|times, then insist that he give up his phone. The guy kept stubbornly
|refusing to give the guy his phone. Then he'd stab a few more times, ask
|again for his phone, and he just kept refusing to give up his phone.
|Rinse and repeat until an awful shitty death in a taxicab over a
|smartphone. Don't be a hero. You can buy a new phone. If someone has
|the upper hand (has a gun on you, knife on you, etc) and asks you for
|mere physical items, just give them what the fuck they want. We used to
|do all kinds of drills when I did Krav Maga and any time someone playing
|the "bad guy" with a knife or gun would start the drill like "give me
|your wallet!", I'd just say "ok, here", and comply. Then I'd be like...
|"anything else?", and I'd just keep complying with their requests until
|they just ran out of requests. "Sure, here's my phone too. Anything
|else?" It was a funny way to sort of de-escalate the situation that
|would make them laugh, but also showed, your wallet isn't worth dying
|over. You can just go home and deactivate your credit cards before they
|spend anything, plus dispute whatever charges are there. Your phone, who
|gives a fuck, I bought a new solid smartphone for like $400 a few months
|ago. Inconvenient to lose some apps and settings and stuff, it would
|take easily several hours to get your main apps set up the way you want
|them to be and to go through the learning curve of using a new phone --
|but again, not worth dying over.

|Its always some black or hispanic and they say you are being racist...
|fk m indian and i dont associate with white hispanic or black I am not
|racist i see whats happening and try to be extra careful around them.
|There are several stereotypes for us indians too and to tell you most
|are right and you should be careful if u get a call with indian accent.
|This is not racism this is life.

|Old man's lucky. It's become somewhat common for robbers to just murder
|the person they're robbing before uttering a word.

|Did he say "fuck you" to the useless backseat passenger when it was
|first over? Edit: as others have said, Subtitles are wrong. It's "fuck

  |u/FassyDriver - 6 hours

  |No, captions were incorrect. He said, "fuck him"

  |I think he was still referring to the kid rolling down the street. He

  |u/Kulastrid - 6 hours

  |It sounded more like "fuck him" but the AI generated captions thought
  |otherwise.

  |u/thereIsAHoleHere - 6 hours
  |
  |The subtitles are incorrect. The man said "fuck him." Also, useless is
  |a bit harsh. This was the best case scenario. Doing anything would
  |likely have made it worse.

    |u/freshcoastghost - 6 hours
    |
    |Yes. I played it without looking at subtitles. It's definitely "fuck

|Cab driver was packing. You hear him say "You wanna get shot?" He was in
|control from the start. That being said, lock your car doors man. It's
|a zero effort precaution that will 100% save you a lot of potential
|heart ache. Also, it's a good thing the banger who got into his car
|wasn't some crazy drug addict. Might have stabbed or shot the dude just
|for looking at him wrong. The thug he was dealing with was a reasonable
|thug. But crazed drug fiends and other criminally insane people aren't
|so predictable. So the dude was placing a lot of faith in his assailant.
