Trump picks fracking firm CEO Chris Wright to be energy secretary
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/11/16/energy-secretary-t...
########################################################################

|u/El_refrito_bandito - 10 hours
|
|Of course he does.

  |u/SandyAmbler - 10 hours
  |
  |It’s like he literally picks the exact opposite of who it should be

    |u/CharcoalGreyWolf - 10 hours
    |
    |That’s because he sees the world through the lenses of money and
    |power only. As such, he only picks people who are willing to fuck up
    |anything else for those two ends.

      |u/roguebananah - 9 hours
      |
      |Third part is extremely important you forgot about They’ll be yes
      |men to whatever Trump wants

        |u/Techialo - 8 hours
        |
        |Fourth, and crucially important part. Trump is the type of guy
        |who hates being the dumbest guy in the room. Unfortunately for
        |us, he's also fucking stupid.

          |u/NorthernerWuwu - 7 hours
          |
          |On the bright side, he's also a terrible judge of character.

            |u/roguebananah - 7 hours
            |
            |True and I think Musk will be out by March and this will
            |wage a war on EVs because he’ll mask it basically saying
            |he’s “giving America the gas power cars we were built on and
            |not getting enslaved by chargers” But really it’s just to
            |hurt Elon more. There’s no way Trump is happy with Musk
            |that long into his presidency. Also thank god Musk can never
            |be president since he’s from South Africa

              |u/GenericFatGuy - 6 hours
              |
              |Musk ain't even making it to Jan 20. Everyone at Mar-a-
              |Lago already hates his guts, which is honestly impressive.
              |And it sounds like he's going around trying to take the
              |credit for Trump's win. Trump's ego won't tolerate that
              |for a second. He's already humiliated Musk at least once
              |in front of a crowd since the election ended. It's
              |comforting to know that even in the worst timeline, Musk
              |is still taking Ls.

                |u/Gypsies_Tramps_Steve - 4 hours
                |
                |So in an ideal scenario, Nelson Tandela gets sick of
                |Musk, they have a huge falling out, and Musk (because
                |he’s a petulant 14 year old in a billionaire’s body)
                |exposes everything he did to help Groper Cleveland win.
                |Of course, in an ideal scenario that released info would
                |then actually do something.

                  |u/boogie_2425 - 1 hour
                  |
                  |But it won’t. How many times can a president be
                  |impeached? We may just find out.

                |u/p____p - 5 hours
                |
                |> it sounds like he's going around trying to take the
                |credit for Trump's win. give it a few weeks til musk
                |and/or trump admits to rigging the election.

                  |u/Common-Ad6470 - 3 hours
                  |
                  |Probably the big ‘secret’ will come out.

                  |u/tarzhjay - 1 hour
                  |
                  |Correct, one of them will undoubtedly slip

                |u/krazineurons - 5 hours
                |
                |Would love to see how Trump humiliated Musk post
                |elections, any links?

              |u/g0ld-f1sh - 7 hours
              |
              |>Also thank god Musk can never be president since he’s
              |from South Africa I didn't think Trump could be president
              |on account of his thirty-four fucking felony charges but
              |here we are.

                |u/pnellesen - 7 hours
                |
                |Not to mention Article 3 of the 14th Amendment, which
                |the entire fucking government seemed to have
                |conveniently forgot existed.

                  |u/bart48f - 6 hours
                  |
                  |for my fellow euro poors stumbling upon this: > If
                  |Your Time is short > Section 3 of the U.S.
                  |Constitution’s 14th Amendment prohibits anyone who
                  |engaged in insurrection against the U.S. from holding
                  |federal or state office. > The U.S. Supreme Court
                  |in March ruled that the rule’s enforcement must come
                  |through an act of Congress, at least by legal
                  |scholars’ interpretations of the ruling. >
                  |There’s no sign Congress will enforce Section 3 to
                  |stop President-elect Donald Trump from becoming the
                  |next president.

                |u/OutInTheBlack - 6 hours
                |
                |thirty-four fucking felony *convictions* he's been
                |charged with way more

                |u/Onlyroad4adrifter - 7 hours
                |
                |It's not the 34 felony counts that's the biggest issue.
                |The fact he blatantly broke the 14th amendment section 3
                |and got away with it. This sets him up for ignoring
                |other constitutional amendments.

                  |u/Nahdudeimdone - 3 hours
                  |
                  |He not only blatantly broke it, he was rewarded for
                  |it. Even if he does zero damage in office and leaves
                  |as he should in four years, the next candidates do not
                  |have to feel beholden to laws at all as long as they
                  |get elected.

                |u/abigailwatson83 - 6 hours
                |
                |Considering every Cabinet position is technically in
                |line for the Presidency, doesn't this also mean he can't
                |hold a cabinet position, or am I missing something?

                  |u/chenga8 - 3 hours
                  |
                  |They are able to be cabinet members, but would not be
                  |in the presidential succession hierarchy. Madeleine
                  |Albright and Elaine Chao are relatively recent
                  |examples of this.

                |u/roguebananah - 7 hours
                |
                |Well at least you (currently at least) HAVE to be born
                |here. Nothing ever said you can’t be a felon (some how)

              |u/DirtDevil1337 - 7 hours
              |
              |>thank god Musk can never be president since he’s from
              |South Africa Watch that party fuck the constitution and
              |not care about it, they won't care if they appoint a
              |foreigner as president. But anyways yeah I don't see
              |Trump wanting Musk in the circle for very long, Must was
              |just being used for the campaign and in no way is Musk and
              |Ramaswamy going to be on the same page with that DOGE
              |crap.

              |u/porterica427 - 5 hours
              |
              |Poor wittle ewon got used for his immediate cash flow to
              |bankroll the campaign and promised the keys to the kingdom
              |in return. Of course ole Don will let him hang around the
              |mansions and talk to world leaders as long as he keeps
              |forking over the money! In science we call this
              |hyperparasitism - when one parasite attaches to/ feeds
              |from another parasite.

          |u/pnellesen - 7 hours
          |
          |Problem is, he's ALWAYS the dumbest guy in the room. Always.

            |u/Fun-Minute4507 - 3 hours
            |
            |Well... When the family sits down for som fast food (I don’t
            |like to call mcdonalds dinner) he has a tight race with jr
            |and Eric.

          |u/Paulpoleon - 7 hours
          |
          |Fifth point: Trump is deliberately trying to fuck America up
          |for Putin.

            |u/Techialo - 7 hours
            |
            |I've been trying to tell people for years, dictators like
            |Putin and Orbán don't like Trump because they think he's a
            |good leader and could work with him; they like Trump because
            |he's a malignant tumor on America.

        |u/TwoPrecisionDrivers - 8 hours
        |
        |That’s part of power, yup

        |u/zxcvt - 8 hours
        |
        |I think you have it backwards. Trump will be the "yes" man for
        |whatever they want.

          |u/FontaineHoofHolder - 7 hours
          |
          |trump Is more of a “да man”

      |u/Inevitable-Menu2998 - 9 hours
      |
      |The amount of money made by the russian oligarchs from dismantling
      |the USSR is staggering. Just think how much money can be made from
      |dismantling the USA and these appointments start making sense.

        |u/GeneReddit123 - 6 hours
        |
        |Weimar Germany, at the time of the Great Depression, had a joke
        |going something like this: * When Germany screws up, Germany
        |suffers. * When America screws up, Germany suffers. The US (at
        |least before Trump has his way with it) is the financial centre
        |of the world, the world's leader in science and technology, the
        |leader of the world's most powerful military alliance, and the
        |keystone of the globalized economic system which all first-world
        |(and many other) countries highly depend on for their own
        |economy. The difference for the world between the collapse of
        |the USSR and the collapse of the USA, is the difference between
        |dropping a vase and dropping an artillery shell. One makes a
        |mess, but only hurts those directly in its path. The other
        |brings down the whole building and everyone in it.

          |u/flatfisher - 4 hours
          |
          |The collapse could be slow while another power picks it up. As
          |an European my biggest fear is not one day China overtaking
          |the US, but the US not tolerating being relegated to a second
          |place and throwing a tantrum with war and nukes to prevent it.
          |First case sucks but life goes on.

            |u/GeneReddit123 - 1 hour
            |
            |Surely it would depend on which way China "overtakes" the
            |US. It's one thing if they overtake with superior science,
            |technology, industry, trade, political alliances. It's
            |another if they overtake by invading Taiwan, hostile actions
            |towards Japan or South Korea, military blockade of the Nine-
            |Dash Line, etc. I think it's unlikely the US would throw
            |nukes first, but there can be definitely an escalation-and-
            |counterescalation pattern which both China and the US could
            |be guilty of, until it does escalate to full-blown war, with
            |both sides pointing the finger on the other as the one
            |responsible for it. Chinese culture is notorious for "saving
            |face", while Trump's ego doesn't allow backing down ever, so
            |in a crisis, the demand by both sides to avoid being
            |perceived as the "loser" could easily lead to an escalation
            |spiral.

        |u/raphanum - 7 hours
        |
        |I’ve heard that Putin might be richer than Musk

        |u/EBBBBBBBBBBBB - 8 hours
        |
        |people talk a lotta shit about the USSR but they conveniently
        |forget that the instant it dissolved (which the majority of
        |Russians didn't want to happen btw) homelessness went up by 50%
        |and millions of people lost any and all social and economic
        |safety nets. Capitalist Russia now is far worse than the USSR
        |ever was - and Tsarist Russia was even worse.

          |u/airfryerfuntime - 7 hours
          |
          |Russia is definitely *not* worse than it was under the USSR.
          |What a ridiculous claim to make.

            |u/EBBBBBBBBBBBB - 7 hours
            |
            |Listen, I'll make no excuses for the USSR's many terrible
            |actions, but there was at least a minimum quality of life
            |assured by its government for most of its existence - that's
            |something that modern Russia doesn't have. Russia is more
            |than capable of prospering, but everything was sucked out of
            |it by oligarchs

              |u/ShawnSmiles - 6 hours
              |
              |Ah yes, the ~20 million excess deaths under the Soviet
              |regime were certainly a great standard which has yet to be
              |beaten. Who doesn't love mass purges, starvation, and
              |diseases.

            |u/leftofmarx - 5 hours
            |
            |It sure as fuck was in the 1990s and well into the 2000s

          |u/KintsugiKen - 6 hours
          |
          |> (which the majority of Russians didn't want to happen btw)
          |Yeah because Russia was the capital state of a colonial empire
          |across Asia that exploited the labor and resources of all the
          |peoples around it to benefit Russians primarily, and
          |especially western Russians in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
          |There's a reason why Russian soldiers in Ukraine are
          |disproportionately from the east and Russia's captured
          |colonies, and there's a reason why they're stealing toilets.

        |u/wintrmt3 - 9 hours
        |
        |They made that money from stealing all the state owned
        |enterprises of the USSR, which was all big companies in the
        |whole country, the US does not have have state owned industries
        |to steal.

          |u/Santa_Says_Who_Dis - 9 hours
          |
          |No, just federal assets like land and intellectual property.

            |u/FontaineHoofHolder - 7 hours
            |
            |Don’t forget Social Security!

              |u/matchosan - 6 hours
              |
              |And the Post Office pention

            |u/Onigokko0101 - 5 hours
            |
            |Also federal jobs. Im pretty sure they are planning on
            |replacing federal workforces with private, charing 4x the
            |amount and pocketing it all. You dont have to steal
            |companies to steal from a nation.

          |u/blacksideblue - 8 hours
          |
          |We have so much more to be stolen and a currency that
          |(currently) has real value. USPS, FHWA, all kinds of service
          |agencies with real properties that also act as competition to
          |businesses. Monetize any one of them into a standalone
          |business without government oversight and it'll be printing
          |money. And with the D.O.G.E. threat, they probably will be
          |printing money and crypto scamming the entire nation at the
          |same time.

          |u/Inevitable-Menu2998 - 9 hours
          |
          |That's just one of the ways, the most visible one, but even
          |so: what protects the private US companies from being taken
          |over by the state before being given to someone else?

          |u/KintsugiKen - 6 hours
          |
          |And billions of that money was illegally laundered out of
          |Russia through Trump's deeply indebted properties in the 90s,
          |getting Trump out of debt and getting stolen Rubles out of
          |Russia for Russian mobsters, facilitated by Jeffrey Epstein as
          |the middle man.

        |u/conduitfour - 7 hours
        |
        |"I told you once before that there were two times for making big
        |money, one in the up-building of a country and the other in its
        |destruction. Slow money on the up-building, fast money in the
        |crack-up. Remember my words. Perhaps they may be of use to you
        |some day." -Gone With The Wind

        |u/Langsamkoenig - 6 hours
        |
        |The thing is, is all that money really worth having to live in a
        |failed state, where you need your private army to go anywhere,
        |lest you be kidnapped and murdered? I mean they already have
        |billions. Is the numbers in your accounts going up a bit more
        |really worth your freedom? They don't seem to think about that
        |aspect.

      |u/memememe81 - 9 hours
      |
      |He looks at everyone as an opportunity to be exploited. If he
      |can't fuck it, eat it, spend it, or manipulate it for his benefit,
      |it has no value to him. We need to start betting on the turnover
      |of his incoming administration. They will only be of value for a
      |short time before he throws them under the bus.

      |u/Aze0g - 8 hours
      |
      |"We killed the planet, but for a brief moment we made extra value
      |for the shareholders holders."

        |u/PM-me-youre-PMs - 3 hours
        |
        |* we killed *ourselves*, but for a brief moment we made extra
        |value for the shareholders

      |Russia is seeing thru money goggles $$

      |u/net_dev_ops - 7 hours

      |It honestly feels like all his choices are made out of spite. He
      |may enjoy hurting people as much as making money.

    |u/Buckeye_Monkey - 9 hours
    |
    |They're trying to break the government to show it needs to be
    |privatized. Been their MO for years.

      |u/HopeEternalXII - 8 hours
      |
      |Break AND loot. \*Thumbs up.

      |u/KintsugiKen - 6 hours
      |
      |> to show it needs to be privatized. That's just a side effect
      |of the main benefit of a non-functional government; inability to
      |regulate private businesses and business people and make sure
      |they're paying their taxes. Oil and fracking billionaires
      |literally wouldn't care if the US govt collapsed into a
      |dictatorship that only protected the oil and fracking
      |infrastructure while everything else went to hell. That would be
      |completely fine with them, worse case scenario they just sell
      |their remote luxurious ranches or penthouse mansions and fly to
      |Dubai or China or somewhere else where they'll be more
      |comfortable.

      |u/PaulVla - 6 hours

    |The problem is that a lot of the laws and norms likely weren't as

    |down or Trump will do sketchy albeit legal things to get recess

    |He needs a bill passed by Congress to end the DoE. A 60 vote
    |threshold (assuming they don't end the fillabuster, which is
    |possible but a long shot). They have three realistic avenues to shit
    |down/severally damage the DoE. I'll talk about them in order of
    |least to most likely to happen and succeed. 1. Completely defund
    |the department except of parts they want/have to maintain. For
    |example the DoE is responsible for accepting applications and
    |running Federal Student loans, federal loan forgiveness programs
    |(which exist due to federal law), title 1 funding allocation, and
    |special education funding allocation. They could simply defund the
    |aspects of the department that have to deal whatever they don't
    |agree with, such as federal guidance state on education standards
    |and special education procedures, learning studies, Title IX
    |enforcement. 2. Just like above, but Trump will do what we already
    |expect him to do and he'll reclassify federal employees so he can
    |fire whomever he wants. He'll guy parts of the department and leave
    |them empty to achieve the goals stated above. 1. Select a SoE who
    |will essentially enforce/refuse to enforce whatever aspects of the
    |department they want. The department will only be as effective as
    |the SoE will allow it to be regardless of funding and staffing. A
    |good example is Betsy DeVos, Trump's last SoE. She basically stalled
    |90% of loan forgiveness while leading the department. She kept
    |almost 90% of PSLF applicants from receiving their loan forgiveness
    |when they first qualified in 2018. That's the kind of bad shit a SoE
    |can do.

      |Project 2025 has an entire chapter on how exactly they plan to
      |tear the DoE apart. Partly by fully privitising college loans, and
      |by forcing education providers to move to a voucher based system
      |for funding. Another key component is making state institutions
      |responsible if a family has a "diversity complaint", as a criminal
      |act (with a Christian-only bent, of course). It's not an
      |inconsiderable layout of the plan. There's no need to guess here

  |Obama had the largest increase in drilling in American history. When
  |Trump took office, the number of active wells went down by 30%.
  |Between Trump and Biden, roughly the same number of wells have been
  |drilled. Under Biden, the US has produced a lot more oil than under
  |Trump. 2023 saw a record year for oil production. And so far the pace
  |this year is 7% above last year’s record. Traditionally, under a
  |democrat president, prices increase. When prices increase, drilling
  |becomes more economical. Also, older wells produce money longer so
  |those are wells are not shut down.

          |A good one is Revelation 11:18: The nations were angry,
          |and your wrath has come...for destroying those who destroy the
          |earth. ( it's long, so I cut out the middle bit)
          |Evangelicals are all about the end of times, so this one is
          |pretty straightforward. You can also quote these two
          |together Psalm 24:1: "The earth is the Lord's, and everything
          |in it, the world, and all who live in it" and Jeremiah
          |2:7: "God laments the destruction of the land and the
          |desecration of His inheritance." You can use the first to show
          |that we need to take care of not only the earth but the people
          |on it as well since it's all His inheritance. If you want to
          |find more (there's so many), it helps if you look up bible

          |environment!

          |would save money using lead. Trump admin slashes so many
          |regulations that they can get away with it again, and probably
          |not even report it. This is what they want. Removing the “red

          |prosperity.

  |His electoral base practically hasn't changed since the 2020 election.
  |We're talking less than 1% of change in numbers. Practically, the same
  |rates of attendance. The same people who voted for him before voted
  |for him again. Not even an insurrection and dozens of felony charges
  |were enough to put a dent in this. What we're seeing here is
  |millions of people whose minds have completely crystalized. Their
  |brains are solid bricks where nothing goes in and nothing comes out.
  |You could show them evidence of Trump's failings *to their face* and
  |they would dismiss it as fake because everything bad everyone ever
  |says about Trump is fake. I'll tell you what will happen when these
  |people start feeling the heat. The first thing they will do is they'll
  |deny that it's happening. They'll say that everything is fine and
  |you're just being histrionic. Then, when things get so bad you can't

      |Because off of reddit and the internet for a lot of people who is

        |u/sarhoshamiral - 6 hours
        |
        |That used to be true but not with Trump unfortunately. His
        |proposals, his cabinet will have significant impact on everyones
        |daily lives especially if congress plays along. This time he
        |will actually directly impact your grocery, electronics,
        |appliances prices (and more), your health care, and for some
        |even the aspects of legality of their families. One can only
        |argue he wouldn't have an impact if one believes he was just
        |talking b.s. on the campaign but we saw between 2016-2020 that
        |it wasn't the case. He actually tried to implement some of his
        |policies to be stopped by courts and congress after 2018 but

|And there's his cabinet picks. Does it have anything to do with Elon

    |u/GullibleCall2883 - 4 hours
    |
    |That's why the National Nuclear Security Administration is part of
    |the DOE. The current Under Secretary is Jill Hruby, a mechanical
    |engineer with experience with nuclear weapon systems and design.
    |Having a nuclear background isn't qualification factor. Fossil fuels
    |is part of the department's responsibility as well. One person isn't
    |expected to know it all but how to manage the big picture then the
    |people under them to manage specific areas then so on. That be

      |u/haarschmuck - 7 hours
      |
      |The whole reason oil is so hard to get away from is that it's the
      |most energy dense medium we have aside from fissile material. A
      |car with a 10 gallon tank will weigh around 80lbs when full. Even
      |with the poor efficiency of gasoline engines that 80lbs will get
      |you hundreds of miles. That same range takes over 1,000lbs for an

  |The DoE does not necessarily determine the energy market. Their
  |research labs do have an important role in researching new energy
  |viability. Additionally they oversee the nuclear weapons stockpile.
  |Wright’s experience in fossil fuels is hostile to the emerging energy
  |part of DoE’s work, and also wholly unqualified to oversee the nuclear
  |weapons part. Being a fossil fuels exec alone should be disqualifying.
  |FERC is a division of DoE but is independent and has a hand in
  |regulating the electricity grid. Trump previously nominated terrible

  |u/ApplauseButOnlyABit - 6 hours
  |
  |Harris trotted out Republican after Republican. She ran to the center
  |and refused to give anything to her base. She was campaigning with
  |Bush Era Republicans. She was doing all of this because she thought
  |that she could abandon the base and court soft Republican votes and in
  |the end she lost votes across the board and actually lost independents
  |compared to Biden. They ran a campaign the exact opposite way the
  |left had been telling them to run a campaign and they lost in
  |spectacular fashion to the worst nominee of all time and yet somehow
  |this is all the left's fault. Fascinating.

|Pick your poison. The whole green economy is a long way from being
|green. We still need fossil fuels to power the grid, and I'm sorry, but
|solar and wind are not going to cut it for a long time, if ever. Every
|large-scale wind and solar power plant requires a fossil fuel plant
|(most of which are natural gas, which a huge amount comes from fracking)
|to back it up for dips in output due to no/light wind and / or lack of
|sunlight from nighttime or when clouds blow over. I'm 100% against
|slave labor, especially when children are being used to mine cobalt to
|power all the ever increasing demands of rechargeable batteries. So I'd
|much rather our economy be powered by fossil fuels than by slave labor.
|And all of you on your high horse, can you honestly say that the green
|technology is really clean? Look at what it takes to mine the raw
|materials, ship it around the world on fuel guzzling ships to be
|refined, manufacture it, and then ship it again around the world on
|massively polluting cargo ships, and not to mention the huge amounts of
|waste they produce when they reach their useful life (ex. Wind turbine
|blades and solar panels).

|Chris Wright is one of the smartest energy people we have. He’s big on
|reducing energy poverty, believes in climate change, and is pro nuclear.
|Maybe try listening to him before writing him off.

  |u/Maleficent_Sense_948 - 8 hours
  |
  |He believes in climate change but doesn’t think its important enough
  |to cut profits, “—There is no climate crisis, and we’re not in the
  |midst of an energy transition either,” Wright said in a video posted
  |to LinkedIn last year.” He’s all about making money, regardless of
  |the outcome for the population. “—Wright is an outspoken critic of
  |policies aimed at curbing climate change, including the Department of
  |Energy’s goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. “There is
  |no such thing as clean energy or dirty energy,” Wright said last year.
  |However, the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy says clean
  |energy, like solar and wind, create little or no carbon emissions, the
  |greenhouse gases responsible for human-amplified global warming.
  |While Wright does not dispute the existence of climate change, he has
  |argued that policies aimed at reducing the impact of climate change
  |are misguided and alarmist, describing the terms climate crisis,
  |energy transition, carbon pollution, clean energy and dirty energy as
  |“destructive deceptions” and “nonsense.” Wright claims that any
  |negative impacts of climate change are “clearly overwhelmed by the
  |benefits of increasing energy consumption” and believes that extreme
  |weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes and floods have not
  |increased because of climate change.”
