              |of a weird place full of weird people. It's not just
              |redneck asswipes, but they are definitely culturally
              |ascendant right now. I miss what I thought Florida was.
              |Now it's just strip malls and asphalt scorching in the
              |sun, endless suburban sprawl, and the constant dread of
              |what the fascist legislature will cook up next. It is

                |We only ever had the best marketing.  This has never,
                |even from its inception, been a true democracy.    Our
                |senate is literally designed to disenfranchise the will
                |of the people.  The electoral college, originally
                |designed to select senators, was bastardized into being
                |deciding votes for presidents.    Two parties only.
                |McCarthyism. No national value placed on civic

              |of their clan 'aren't worth it' and that they should 'just

      |
      |The gerrymandering doesn't really apply for statewide elections
      |like the presidency. It's absolutely a huge problem, but more one
      |related to the house and state legislature.

        |u/hamlet_d - 8 hours
        |
        |The second part (suppression and oppression) does, and the first
        |applies to how blue Texas is in congress. If you look at the
        |districts, it looks like spaghetti to ensure the maximum number
        |for GOP reps while also concentrating democrats in fewer and
        |fewer districts. Gerrymandering also is a
        |suppression/oppression tactic as well because of the way it
        |feels psychologically if you are a blue voter in a gerrymandered
        |red district it can be very demoralizing because there is no
        |real competitivity in the elections.

    |There's not much they could have done before the election. But
    |protests only work if they're simultaneous mass protests on a
    |national scale. The only way to accomplish that is joining efforts
    |to organize. And there's always a need for charismatic figureheads

              |Exactly this. Additionally, marginalized young people are
              |likely going to have lots of go-fund-me and ko-fi posts to
              |try and get basic necessities over the coming years. They
              |do now too, but when things get worse, they'll need more
              |help than ever. If you have money, it's one of the easiest
              |and most direct ways you can help someone out without
              |actually physically interacting with them. It can mean the
              |difference between living in a tiny apartment, and living
              |in a tent under the highway for people in that position.
              |And if you can't donate, then help boost/repost them to

    |always starts her sentences with “as a lifelong democrat” and then
    |launches into a tirade about liberals are too PC and losing dems to
    |the right. She campaigned for Hilary and Biden, but voted for Rick
    |Caruso She was very quiet election night and her sister posted a
    |“we can all be friends” picture post election night. Now she won’t
    |stop posting about how “it’s the democrats being so woke that caused
    |this!!!” and I’m like “no, bitch, it’s you directly voting for Trump
    |that caused this”. These DINOs pretending that Kamala didn’t run
    |as a center right candidate to stick it to the leftists are just as
    |problematic as the far left they hate. The continued liberal
    |infighting after very eye opening loss is so depressing.

      |stunned..as was the other American across from me > These DINOs
      |pretending that Kamala didn’t run as a center right candidate to
      |stick it to the leftists That is crap. Her policies were OK, not
      |brilliant, but hardly a big departure from Biden's. who has been
      |considered on the left of where the Democrats have been for
      |decades. There was more of a disinformation campaign that Harris
      |was moving right to gain voters like Cheney than the actual fact
      |that Cheney saw the actual danger from Trump and made the decision
      |to vote in a way he never would in the past. She did a lot of
      |work to convince these people, but if you look at her actual
      |policies, they were pretty average. The only thing that would
      |really be considered right was immigration, and again that policy
      |was to enact a law that Biden failed to get through..one that is
      |very popular with voters

        |u/Alice_In_WanderLust - 4 hours
        |
        |I say “center right” because of how much the discussion has
        |shifted in terms of progressive politics. Harris was forced to
        |denounce several “leftist” opinions she had which were just
        |mostly general liberal beliefs re: cops, LGBTQ+ rights, guns,
        |government programs, etc to try to court the non MAGA repubs.
        |Her policies were absolutely just middle of the line, but that’s
        |not what was advertised Her economic policies were some of the
        |most detailed, with actual figures and calculations and
        |solutions - but the electorate who polled “the economy” being
        |their top concern voted against her while simultaneously saying
        |she was too progressive. “Progressive” means social issues for
        |people, and the MAGA messaging/ads were about extremely niche
        |issues like trans men in women’s sports and late term/post term
        |abortions and whatever health misinformation I can’t even get
        |into - but none of it was true nor part of her campaign. This
        |election was decided by the most vocal people online, and the
        |people who projected their feelings regarding the online voices
        |- reactive or proactive - on to the candidates. Very little was
        |about actual policy.

    |As whole the votes look wide. But spread out among 3 swings states
    |(MI, WI, PA) if Harris got 300k more votes between those 3 states,
    |she would have won the whole election. That's how you can win the

    |u/TotoroTheCat - 8 hours
    |
    |I'm a Canadian and saying this as an outside observer, Trump won by
    |a landslide. 70+ more electoral college votes than Harris, millions
    |more in the popular vote, won Senate and House for the

    |Yes, now that votes are much closer to be counted, the margin is
    |much, much closer. Sources are varied on the exact numbers and
    |percentages, but the AP has Harris at 48.3% of the popular vote and
    |Trump at 50.1%. CNN has him at 50% and her at 48.2%. He won the
    |popular vote by less than 3 million votes. It seems

    |That's a fair assessment IMO. Ever since the pandemic, it's clear
    |that this country is failing in a fundamental way. Half of the
    |people out there are acting like homicidal toddlers. Tariffs are
    |not an economic policy. Mass deportation is not a housing policy.
    |This reporting about planned political purges of the military is not
    |a reform policy. These are not difficult concepts to grasp for
    |people that want their country to do better. I don't think they do.
    |I think they just want to blow shit up. You can't negotiate with a

  |u/Punchable_Hair - 8 hours
  |
  |I said something very similar in another thread but I think the
  |country is just now waking up to exactly *how* big of a right-wing
  |propaganda problem we have. Since 2022, we have had right-wing
  |billionaires change the editorial bent of news outlets like CNN, we
  |had Elon Musk buy Twitter and turn it into an alt-right playground, we
  |had Silicon Valley cast their lot firmly with Trump where they used to
  |support Dems, and we’ve seen the rise of bro podcasters and pro-Trump
  |Tiktokers who have begun warping the minds of GenZ. Those are pretty
  |serious headwinds for any candidate to face. Frankly, I think even
  |Obama would have trouble. And I can’t think of a solution to a problem
  |like this, which is kind of scary, but without a way to break the far-
  |right’s information monopoly on a disturbingly large and growing
  |segment of the electorate, we may end up sliding into a Russian,
  |Berlusconi, Brazilian fuckpile, to paraphrase the TV show Succession.

    |Anyone who didn't open their eyes to right wing propaganda after the
    |Brexit vote wasn't paying attention. It was one of the first
    |successful underminings of western democracy through the hands of
    |targeted propaganda, and it laid out exactly how democracy was going
    |to broken around the world in the future. We're in that future now.
    |Our leaders didn't care enough to learn and they didn't care enough
    |to stop it.

          |went mostly blue, but had several votes that were exclusively
          |for Trump and no down ballots at all. Harris has some like

      |>This is my second Duty to Warn Letter regarding hacking of the

      |directed to Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Officials. Both warnings
      |are made per DNI Clapper’s 2015 directive to all agencies and
      |contractors associated with intelligence and financial agency
      |technologies to warn of suspicions of hacking. >Professionally
      |I have worked as the CEO or CTO at seven high technology firms
      |including two which specialized in hacking and counter-hacking
      |operations. My clients have included numerous governments DoD,
      |DHS, Dept. of State, F100 Financials and F500 Industrials. >I am

      |From everything we were seeing and hearing, does it make any sense

      |conspiracy to think the candidate that had a fake elector scheme
      |would somehow scheme to interfere with the next election?

    |The protests had no real or lasting effect the last time. It was
    |cathartic, but accomplished nothing. I'd even argue that they
    |probably had a negative effect ultimately, because some of the Trump
    |voters cite them as a reason they voted for him this election.
    |It's even worse now, too. Protests only have value when the power

|convictions which he will now very likely never see a day in jail for,

|This should've happened after the SCOTUS 14th ruling. Should've
|happened after the failed impeachment. Should've happened in the middle
|of the Texas cold storm. If you want to blame voters, were all too
|accepting and inactive on activism. Even I'm sitting here spouting some
|comment on reddit. The Internet's done strides to really complicate what
|a sit-in or a march would've accomplished 30 years ago.

  |Yeah, this headline and photo make it look like a crowd at a Trump

|u/Squirrelkid11 - 9 hours
|
|I honestly feel convinced this election was rigged due to Elon
|weaponizing X by turning it into an Alt-Right disinformation App and
|Foreign governments like Russia interfering with voting machines. Before
|the election, Trump was more hated than he ever was and that would've
|gotten more and more people to hate him plus everyone knowing how
|dangerous he is, and yet somehow he still won.

  |u/haarschmuck - 9 hours

  |Trump had the same amount of votes he got last time. Democrats lost

|I’m a Dallas resident and let me respond to a lot of the comments here.
|Comments saying things like “too late” or “where was this earlier?” or
|“only 40 people?”. We’ve been doing this chant for many years.
|Specifically I want to say it started sometime after Charlottesville.
|And many times it was far more than 40 people. Let me also point out
|that Dallas county voted for Harris 60% to Trump’s 38%. We did what we
|could. But at the end of the day, this is Texas. And every county
|surrounding us went to Trump, including Tarrant County which went for
|Biden in 2020. There’s only so much the residents of Dallas can do. I do
|at least appreciate that there’s still motivation to do these chants
|even now.

|>The rallies were organized before the election results were released,
|as a show of frustration with the U.S. government regardless of the
|political party in charge. Gee, maybe if they'd done a tiny bit of
|research they would have realized that the Democratic Party has been
|fighting FOR Americans, while the Republican Party has been undermining
|America's democracy for almost 100 years. Mistreating military
|veterans: Republican president Herbert Hoover, who participated in the
|'relaxing' of government regulations on Wall Street and the banking
|industry, which helped cause the collapse of 1929. His 'hands off'
|approach deepened the Great Depression. In another parallel with Trump
|(and some other Republicans), Hoover's financial failures led to a
|massive tent city of homeless veterans and their families encamped in
|Washington DC. The veterans wanted early payment of their service bonus
|certificates for fighting in WWI, and they needed it sooner than the
|delayed schedule that Hoover wanted to stick to. From Wikipedia:
|>Many of the war veterans had been out of work since the beginning of
|the Great Depression. The World War Adjusted Compensation Act of 1924
|had awarded them bonuses in the form of certificates they could not
|redeem until 1945. Each certificate, issued to a qualified veteran
|soldier, bore a face value equal to the soldier's promised payment with
|compound interest. The principal demand of the Bonus Army was the
|immediate cash payment of their certificates. >On July 28, 1932, U.S.
|Attorney General William D. Mitchell ordered the veterans removed from
|all government property. Washington police met with resistance, shot at
|the protestors, and two veterans were wounded and later died. President
|Herbert Hoover then ordered the U.S. Army to clear the marchers'
|campsite. Army Chief of Staff General Douglas MacArthur commanded a
|contingent of infantry and cavalry, supported by six tanks. The Bonus
|Army marchers with their wives and children were driven out, and their
|shelters and belongings burned. Notice the similarities between the
|Republican treatment of American veterans in 1932, and Trump and his
|sycophants' current attitudes towards the US military and its personnel,
|Trump's treatment of protesters, and the Republican Party's efforts to
|make homelessness illegal. Another example of the Republican Party's
|long-running schemes to install a christo-fascist authoritarian
|dictatorship over America:
|https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot >The Business Plot, also
|called the Wall Street Putsch and the White House Putsch, was a
|political conspiracy in 1933, in the United States, to overthrow the
|government of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and install Smedley Butler
|as dictator. >Butler, a retired Marine Corps major general, testified
|under oath that wealthy businessmen were plotting to create a fascist
|veterans' organization with him as its leader and use it in a coup
|d'état to overthrow Roosevelt.    >In 1934, Butler testified under oath
|before the United States House of Representatives Special Committee on
|Un-American Activities (the "McCormack–Dickstein Committee") on these
|revelations. >Although no one was prosecuted, the congressional
|committee final report said, "there is no question that these attempts
|were discussed, were planned, and might have been placed in execution
|when and if the financial backers deemed it expedient." >.... It
|[Bonus Army protest/homeless veterans tent city] was encouraged by an
|appearance from retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler, a popular
|military figure of the time. A few days after Butler's arrival,
|President Herbert Hoover ordered the marchers removed and U.S. Army
|cavalry troops under the command of Gen. Douglas MacArthur destroyed
|their camps.[citation needed] >Butler, although a self-described
|Republican, responded by supporting Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 US
|presidential election. By 1933, Butler started denouncing capitalism and
|bankers, going on to explain that for 33 years he had been a "high-class
|muscle man" for Wall Street, the bankers and big business, labeling
|himself as a "racketeer for Capitalism". I see that even back then the
|New York Times swung in the direction of the pathologically greedy elite
|conservatives.... Corruption:    https://rantt.com/gop-admins-
|had-38-times-more-criminal-convictions-than-democrats-1961-2016
|>Republican administrations have vastly more corruption than Democratic
|administrations. We provide new research on the numbers to make the
|case. We compared 28 years each of Democratic and Republican
|administrations, 1961-2016, five Presidents from each party.    >During
|that period Republicans scored eighteen times more individuals and
|entities indicted, thirty-eight times more convictions, and thirty-nine
|times more individuals who had prison time.    Sex offenders:
