|Came here to say this! And the guy who did Manson in the same series!
|That casting was 🤌🤌🤌
|u/BigFigWasp - 12 hours
|
|He also played Manson in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (I think that

|I thought Tarantino casted him After he saw his scene in

|It probably was that way around actually, all I know is he

|Honestly a terrific actor.

|I didn’t know who Ed Kemper really was when I watched mindhunter,

|Philip Seymour Hoffman - Truman Capote (Capote) Charlize Theron -
|Aileen Wuornos (Monster)
|u/notchandlerbing - 16 hours
|
|Philip Seymour Hoffman probably does take the cake for an all time
|great Capote performance, no doubt. It helps that *Capote* (2005) was
|a near-masterpiece (and Catherine Keener deserves her flowers for
|Harper Lee too) But Toby Jones as Capote in *Infamous* (2006) gets
|unfairly overshadowed, since it came out a year later and the film
|just wasn’t as great overall. IMO he looks and *sounds* far more the
|part (PSH overcame that with his strong performance), and did a
|similarly fantastic job My hot take is that wile PSH did a fine job
|in serving the script, Toby Jones played a much more accurate and
|true-to-life version of Truman Capote. To the point where if we’re
|simply comparing who did the better job inhabiting the character, I’d
|say Toby gave the superior performance (in isolation). And PSH’s voice
|at times seemed to veer heavily into caricature territory
|u/Bhadbaubbie - 15 hours
|
|Was just coming here to say this. Toby Jones is unbelievable in
|that role. And I’m certainly not taking anything away from PSH as
|he’s probably my favourite actor
|u/alreadyknowwbroo - 14 hours
|
|Hoffman is my favorite actor of all time also ever since I was
|pretty young along with Paul Giamatti coming in at a respectably
|close 2nd but there's just no comparison to PSH
|u/theavengerbutton - 11 hours
|
|Toby Jones nails everything that he's in, no surprise there. Dude is
|incredible.
|u/Ambitious-Sale3054 - 9 hours
|
|Toby Jones did inhabit that character more. Truman Capote was my
|favorite author when I was in the 7th grade back in the 60’s due to
|a teacher reading his short stories to our class as well as playing
|an album of A Christmas Memory that I thought was narrated by a
|woman. I stayed up late to watch Truman Capote on the Tonight Show
|and lo and behold that was Truman’s voice on that record!
|u/Salarmot - 17 hours
|
|Capote was fucking incredible
|u/officefridge - 14 hours
|
|Philip absolutely nailed that role. That acting in the film
|absolutely broke my mind, i have never seen anything quite like
|this. He, regardless of being long gone, still is my favourite
|actor. I love his acting, truly.
|u/cdheer - 11 hours
|
|He had *range* too. Like, watch Capote, and then watch State and
|Main, where he crushes it as the romantic male lead in a romantic
|comedy. Gone WAY too soon.

|As was Monster
|u/waxteeth - 15 hours
|
|Something that’s really cool about PSH as Capote: if you listen to the
|DVD commentary (heartbroken that these aren’t really a thing anymore),
|he is really upfront about the fact that his initial performance
|sucked — he couldn’t find the character, and he knew it. He’d done a
|bunch of prep and it just wasn’t clicking, and he was terrified. The
|director doesn’t contradict him when he says this — it’s not PSH
|judging himself too harshly because his standards were so high. BUT.
|They both agree that after a certain point, he locked in and gave the
|performance we see in the movie. Even someone that talented really
|struggled with his work at times; no artist is “safe” from a shitty
|time and all you can do is keep going. Since the public pretty much
|only sees finished projects, it’s easy to forget that and think if
|your current draft sucks, it can never get better. It can, as long as
|you keep going.
|u/DasFunke - 15 hours
|
|Monster was crazy good. Theron doesn’t get enough credit anymore. She
|did then because she won an Oscar, but it’s kind of forgotten now.
|u/shananiganz - 12 hours
|
|My knee jerk reaction was, “why didn’t they find an ugly actress to
|play the lead?” Then I watched the movie and was blown away by her
|performance
|u/JMer806 - 10 hours
|
|The makeup artists deserve an Oscar for being able to make
|Charlize Theron unattractive
|u/Miami_Mice2087 - 6 hours
|
|Theron gained 30 pounds and also neglected her health and skin
|care routine to make her face look pimply, puffy, and mottled.
|Plus the makeup dpt used Star Trek alien silicone techniques to
|add Wuornos' trademark pocks and scars from her drug use and
|probably drug-related skin picking.
|u/kitti-kin - 3 hours
|
|I feel like there was a conceptual element to casting Theron too -
|part of the point of that story was that Aileen Wuornos was *made*
|ugly by poverty and trauma and a deeply fucked up life. She wasn't
|born a monster, and her superficial "ugliness" was pretty much all
|just poverty (bad teeth, damaged skin, premature aging, etc).
|u/tmink0220 - 14 hours
|
|Monster was crazy good.
|u/cdheer - 11 hours

|For me, this was Benicio Del Toro in Fear and Loathing. I watched

|u/Beginning_Pudding_69 - 17 hours

|Guy was such a master of his craft. You really realize the more time
|goes on and you see him in role after role. It’s like at one point
|you go “man this guy really has a knack for picking good movies to
|be in” and then you go “oh shit no this guy literally makes the
|movie good”. No matter the size of his role he makes a grand
|impression. His death was a tragedy. You saw man with an addiction

|h in one night before he passed. Poor dude probably couldn’t even

|Yeah it's no contest really, he learned the songs and was pretty damn

|Apparently he learned the songs and the way Jim sang them so well
|that OG band members could not distinguish between Val and Jim, as

|It's a 10 minute record of him having lunch with Finnish Field

|It’s actor who played the person most accurately not actor who

|I personally think he overdid it. Andy was subtle; Jim was not
|u/RekopEca - 15 hours
|
|I also found it obnoxious... But I think what Carey was really
|trying to do was "live the Kaufman mind" not necessarily copy Andy.
|The idea that anything, ANYTHING could be a performance. You never
|knew with Andy what elements were him or what was "performance".
|That's why his career, cancer/death was controversial etc. Jim's
|interpretation was exhausting but somehow effective. The movie is

|When he method acted this, the real people that knew the real Andy

|Except that Jim was a huge asshole on set. Jerry Lawler had talked

|backstage was a straight up dick to Lawler. Jerry said that he and
|Andy were good friends and Andy was an incredibly down to earth
|person.
|u/RechargedFrenchman - 12 hours
|
|Yeah the "public" Andy as played by Carrey was spot-on and
|basically everyone involved in production agrees. The "private"
|Andy, Andy when he wasn't performing, was no different in Carrey's
|performance despite the real man being a very different person
|when he wasn't "on". Carrey only knew "working Andy" because
|that's all anyone in the larger public knew. And he nailed it. But
|that wasn't all there was to Andy as a person and Carrey failed to
|grasp that at all.
|u/KoosGoose - 15 hours
|
|Not really. It was cringe when he met Kaufman’s parents and stayed

|I think in Bombshell, Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly was pretty spot on.
|On a similar score, I don’t know enough about how he is and his

|It's one of the best adaptations I've ever seen, even Hunter S.
|Thomson rewatched the film on a regular basis because he was so
|pleased with how it turned out. That is extremely rare for
|literary authors to feel this way about film adaptations of their

|u/DungeonAssMaster - 11 hours

|He was good friends with Hunter; I could be wrong but I think

|One of Freddie’s friends/acquaintances (I forget who, exactly) took

|You mean you didn’t enjoy watching him act around his veneers? I also

|Sacha Baron Cohen would have done with it.
|u/hanifshaikh_95 - 17 hours
|
|Sacha would have played Freddie with utmost perfection and honesty.
|He wanted to show what freddie really was. So much so that the
|studio got worried.
|u/space_cowboy80 - 16 hours
|
|They also wanted to have Freddie dying as the middle point of the

|vehemently disagreed with them on that one.
|u/WalterPecky - 16 hours
|
|I didn't make it more then 15 min into this movie before
|bailing. Is that what happened in the film?
|u/Infamous-Lab-8136 - 12 hours
|
|No. The big climax is them doing Live Aid together and then
|they scroll the facts about Freddie's death over the crowd
|shot as I recall. Forgive me I only saw it once, but they
|didn't even get into the recording of Innuendo or anything
|like that. Honestly it is one of the worst biopics about
|being nothing but bald-faced lies. For instance they do a
|whole thing with a controlling boyfriend keeping him from even
|knowing about Live Aid and Mary coming to him in the rain at a
|recording studio to save him. In truth he knew about it and
|the band had been discussing it for weeks before deciding. It
|takes similar divergences from reality all over.
|u/FalcoFox2112 - 17 hours

|I appreciated the way they handled his sexuality with subtlety and

|His performance was OK, but he was never going to carry Freddie. He
|was like 80٪ Freddie. He just couldn't match the personality. Being
|80% his size didn't help either. The script was terrible. The
|underlying message was things only went bad when Freddie experimented
|with being gay and it got better when he stopped being gay. All power
|to Malek. He didn't do a bad job. He was just the wrong choice in a
