TIL that when F1 driver Pedro Rodriguez won the 1967 South African Grand
Prix, becoming the first ever Mexican driver to win an F1 race, the
organizers didn't have the Mexican anthem, and instead played the
Mexican hat dance. After that, Rodriguez always traveled with a record
of the anthem with him

      |they should've made up a country for those movies. it would've
      |still worked because Americans don't know shit about geography and
      |it would've been funnier because you'd have dumb Americans being
      |like "oh yeah, Boobistan, that's definitely a place."

|Just like when Tazio Nuvolari won the 1935 German Grand Prix. The Nazis
|were so sure the race would be won by their shiny new Mercedes/Auto
|Union cars and Aryan drivers, but Nuvolari won the race in a four year
|old Alfa Romeo. They didn't have a copy of the Italian national anthem
|to play when he won, so Nuvolari walked back to his car, reached in and
|took out a recording of the song and handed it over for the race
|officials to play.

    |A lot of people in the Northern hemisphere have trouble
    |understanding that there are white people in latino countries.
    |Latino is a cultural identity, not an ethnicity. There are black
    |latinos, indigenous latinos, white latinos, asian latinos and people
    |with mixed heritages.

    |No. For South African apartheid regime, that wasn’t white enough.
    |In the US, Italians and Spanish weren’t considered sufficiently
    |white. Irish were also lumped here. It’s gets murky for racial
    |delineation.

      |In South Africa all people of European descent, including white
      |south Americans, were considered white Apartheid worked like
      |this, you had this hierarchy from top to bottom: whites (all
      |Europeans), Indians (people from British India who immigrated to
      |South Africa), Coloureds (simplifying for brevity, basically mixed
      |people) and Blacks (the native population) It was a different
      |system from what happened in America (with segregation and the one
      |drop rule and all), which is what you're alluding to, and it's
      |frankly disrespectful to lump the two together
