[TRIGGER WARNING: self harm] Finding someone who has recently
disappeared and is in danger
\[TRIGGER WARNING: self harm\]
The rules say no help finding a person but I don't have anywhere else to
look.
3 days ago in the early morning, said person wrote a suicide note and
left their house. They took (at least) a navy jacket and an iphone with
no service. Police have investigated but on the second day of
disappearance, it rained.
Police dogs were able to track their scent to the woods behind the house
but not further than that. They are unable to take more drastic action
because said person is over 18.
I suspect that they have fled far on foot, and are hiding somewhere
while intending to starve themselves until the end. Clearly, there is
limited time to act. Please, if you have any idea how to find said
person please help me.

EDIT:
Thank you for everyone who offered help. He has been found nearby and
unfortunately the news isn't good. The autopsy will likely confirm that
he passed of hypothermia.
Always check up on your family members and friends.

|You could write an email to the media asking anyone with a thermal
|imaging drone for assistance. There could be some dude or maybe
|university that has one .

|
|This is the way. Seriously. Get a thermal drone.

|This not far from me. Have you put it out in the local subs? r/triangle
|r/northcarolina plus surrounding cities? More visibility the better to
|find someone who may have seen something. I know how distressing this
|is, I’m so sorry. I’ve unfortunately been in your shoes before.

|A healthy young person would take weeks or months to die from
|starvation. The cold would likely become an issue sooner than not
|eating starting in mid November, anywhere that experiences a true
|winter at this time of year. Dehydration would happen faster, within
|a week or two, but it's actually VERY difficult to intentionally
|dehydrate yourself to death. It takes so much willpower. You have no
|idea. Even if someone is already terminally ill, it can still take like
|a week to die from VSED (voluntary stopping of eating and drinking) and
|be *agonizing* without pain medication and sedation. Someone who wants
|to harm themselves is pretty much guaranteed to give up if this is the
|method they're relying on. If you don't believe or have reason to
|believe they would take *intentional action* towards harming themselves
|in this way...... The inaction of not eating or even not drinking? That
|takes much more willpower than any other method. It's much more painful
|than almost any other method, for much longer. If they can't bring
|themselves to do it another way, they won't bring themselves to do it
|this way either. Add on that being given a certain amount of time
|(from hours to days) to sit with their thoughts will make a HUGE
|portion of attemptees to change their minds? Your best bet is to
|make it very clear in any way you know how, that they are lovingly
|welcomed back home and into the lives of their loved ones whenever they
|want to come back. Because the biggest barrier to you finding someone
|whose intent was to starve to death is likely going to be their own
|embarrassment once they realize they can't actually do that.

|
|and possibly being lost, confused and hungry could make coming back
|difficult. also, that phone? you can call 911 on a phone without
|service, so that's hopeful.
|u/qgsdhjjb - 1 day
|
|Yeah if it's like truly deep wilderness, accidental death is
|definitely a possibility and I would say they should be doing
|search parties in that case if possible, the way you would if any
|camper or hiker got lost in the woods and you only had an entry
|point. If it's just a tiny little half-assed "Forest" in the
|suburbs with a bunch of trails in it tho they'd hopefully be able
|to find their way out. Without service as in without paid
|service yes you can dial 911. There are parts of the mountain
|however where there is literally no service at all, paid or
|otherwise, unless you have a sat phone, I know there's a spot
|between where I grew up and where my grandma lives that there's no
|cell service even at the highway and if you get stuck in a snow
|storm there you just kinda need to wait for the plow to come by and
|if you're REALLY stuck they'll call somebody when they get to that
|part of their route to come get you. Either way I hope they find
|their way to somewhere safe. Even if it isn't the place where
|people are looking for them and they just start fresh. I would say,
|assuming they physically *can* get to safety, it's definitely more
|likely that they will find their way there, rather than won't.

|For some reason I am unable to see the missing person's report you

|It works for me. You have to scroll down a little bit.
|u/TWFM - 19 hours
|
|You have to be subscribed to that Nextdoor page.
|u/Lucky-Possession3802 - 17 hours
|
|You definitely don’t. I don’t even have a Nextdoor account and I
|can see it.
|u/TWFM - 12 hours
|
|Okay, then I stand corrected. But when I click the link I get
|directed to the main Cary Nextdoor page with options to
|"subscribe" or "share". If I scroll down I just get to the
|bottom of that main page with no other options to go anywhere
|else. I see someone else in this thread has the same problem.

|I googled the woods mentioned, and if he was getting desperate, I think
|he'd be trying to find a source of water. I would look at getting a
|drone to scan the area around the kit creeks behind that housing area.
|I think if someone's going to do it, they have a plan further than
|going into the woods to starve or get dehydrated. But I wouldn't
|discount the idea that he might have chickened out and is getting more
|and more lost in the woods trying to find his way back. I hope thats
|the case and you find them soon!

|Do you have a group of people you can mobilize (school friends, sports
|team, Boy Scout troop, church)? A grid search on foot seems like it
|would be most promising based on my limited info.

|
|Can you post the missing person alert as its own? The link above only
|leads to an info page about Cary law enforcement from next door. It
|doesn’t scroll or swipe. This happened Wednesday of this week,
|correct?
