hi there, net.records!
i like it. i'll subscribe. count me in.

query one, to get the ball rolling: where do most people get their
records? berkeley has a marvelous underground culture, and is geared
to the student's budget. there are five (count 'em, FIVE) used record
stores within walking distance of my apartment. four of them are
primarily punk/new wave/experimental, but one is exclusively funk and
jazz. all of them also feature new albums by popular and not-so-popular
(with a bullet) artists, and (don't quote me before a grand jury)
quite a decent selection of bootlegs. cheap, too; $4 and less per album.
this helps beat the prices of new albums (at about eight bucks
per, i don't own many of those). the only problem with this set-up
is that you have to wait about a month and a half after an album comes
out to find a used copy. you also have to peer closely into the grooves
while you're still in the store, to be sure nobody's spilled ex-lax or
coffee on the album they sold.

also, who knows what the status of "rather ripped records" is? they
used to be on the north side of the uc berkeley campus, a two-block
walk from my office in evans hall. then they moved to oakland somewhere,
and i lost track of them. they used to advertise in rolling stone a lot.
they had a great record search service. i'd tell them i wanted a single
of "dry bones" by the original artist, but i didn't know who the original
artist was. two weeks later, they'd call me and tell me they found a
copy by the kingsmen from 1960, and was i interested? since they moved,
i've seen no advertisements and heard no rumors. i'd like to track these
guys down, as they were the sole bay area distributor for the english
label rough trade. alas, the times change...

so get those digital cards and letters sent, amici and amicae. first
person with the correct address for rather ripped wins my personally
transcribed copy of the lyrics to the dead kennedy's album, "fresh
fruit for rotting vegetables." oh, that reminds me... the new kennedy's
ep (i forget its christian name) is excellent. has a version of
"california uber alles" with ronald reagan substituted for jerry brown.
yow!
