Meetup: Portland Metro Outside Do @ Bye and Bye

Even before the MetaTalk post I was thinking about posting something outside (cart pod? Beer garden? Other?) for our fair city.
I don't know what anyone's availability is or where we would even meet since our go to locations Green Dragon and Tugboat are long closed. I get that people may still be pro-outside due to covid, etc and the weather is getting better so it could work! The brewing team for GD moved to Labyrinth Forge if anyone loved their in-house stuff. Cascade is still kicking, as is Eastburn. So it's not all dead. I personally am only available weekend evenings as work and owning a business takes most of the time during the day. But let's discuss and determine a time and place.

Daytime temps are going to stay in the 40's and 50's for a few weeks yet, especially after dark...maybe a little too chilly for relaxing outside. I'm willing to go indoors, though of course I can't speak for anyone else.

Some of the places with patios in the burbs have heaters so I figure there's probably the same in PDX proper.

I'm pretty flexible in the afternoons and evenings. I live in South Tabor.

I'm fine with indoors too but yeah in the city proper there should be plenty of (somewhat) heated outdoor spaces. I'm most familiar with SE and Foreland (https://forelandbeer.com/the-study) has a nice covered backyard area. And the Lucky Lab is the OG outdoor beer meetup space of course.

I've been to gatherings at the Bye and Bye on Alberta. They seem to have a semi-outdoor space that's usually pretty comfortable and heated. Usually I go on like a Tuesday night though. It might get busier on a weekend evening, but maybe a quiet Sunday could work?

I am game. Indoors or out.

Count me in as well, fine with either indoor or outdoors, though with a preference for outdoor/semi-outdoor. My partner teaches college students and I don't want to be a disease vector! Weekend evenings are great. As I am a relatively recent arrival (summer 2022), I haven't been to a ton of places and not sure where would be good.

Does anyone have a preference for food choices? What's the target price for a pint?
posted by fiercekitten at 6:11 PM

---------------------------

I'm happy with "bar food". In my experience $6-7/pint is pretty common - at least in the places I've gone (which doesn't include dive bars or upscale places).

---------------------------

I'm also up for either indoor or outdoor, but with a preference for outdoor-ish. The Bye & Bye is in a convenient location for me and sounds good. Another option in the same part of town in Bar Victoria, which has a good amount of outdoor space, and has good vegan food options as well, if that's relevant for anybody.

The Bye and Bye came up in a list of bars with patios, as did Rose and Thistle, Rontom's and White Owl Social Club. Most of them open in the afternoon, except the Bye and Bye which does brunch, so which place may also depend on when we want to meet.

How about the Hawthorne Asylum food cart pod (IG / Yelp reviews)? There's a large covered tent zone with heat lamps and picnic tables (photo) and they are open until 9:30pm. fiercekitten mentioned that weekend evenings are their only availability so I think popular places like The Bye & Bye might be tricky in terms of space/audibleness.

---------------------------

Prost! Marketplace on Mississippi and Skidmore is another cart pod with potential. Not sure if they have heaters or not, photos indicate maybe.

Should we do a doodle about time/day?

Is that what the kids are doing today? Does it require a login?

Doodle?

I'm not submitting my email address to yet another unknown website, but either Mar 10 or 17 is fine with me. I'll mention though that March 17 is St. Patrick's Day, which could have an impact on how busy a place is.

---------------------------

Yes lets do it! The Zed (89th and Powell) has great indoor seating, lots of food options, and parking (and it's a 5 minute walk from my house haha)

I said yes to both Sun March 10th and Sun March 17th. I think as long as we don't pick an Irish pub we should be okay for March 17th? fiercekitten, I think as the organizer you should have the power to choose date and location. ;-) Or if we want to get really dorky, we can do ranked choice voting. I'm willing to set up the Google Form....

---------------------------

What's the general sense of how busy the Bye and Bye would be on a Sunday at around 3pm? They're not a sports bar, right?
posted by fiercekitten at 5:28 PM

---------------------------

I guess nobody has a sense...
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:15 PM

---------------------------

Shall we plan for Sun March 17th, since the 10th is this coming weekend? The forecast is for much warmer temperatures that weekend as well, which would make a food cart pod a much more pleasant proposition!

Work demands our attention the 17th. Does the 24th work?
posted by fiercekitten at 7:29 PM

---------------------------

I'm ok with it.

Sun March 24th is good for me as well!

I hope some more of y'all move from Maybe to Attending!

---------------------------

Er, what's the start and end time for our Sunday March 24th meet up?
posted by spamandkimchi at 2:58 PM

---------------------------

The panel at the top shows a start time of 3pm. The end time will come, er, by and by... Past meetups have usually lasted around 3-ish hours, sometimes 4 if everyone's having a really good time. But nobody should feel obligated to arrive right at the beginning, or stay to the bitter end.

See y'all tomorrow!

Cool, I added it to my calendar but it depends how well I sleep tonight :)
posted by rebent at 3:15 PM

---------------------------

Damn it, I really wanted to be there, but the nasty cold (now mostly receded) has left me with a totally clogged ear, which makes it very hard for me to hear anyone talking, which in turn would make communication frustratingly difficult. So I will sadly have to beg off, with hopes that future meetups might be possible, as the weather continues to warm. Have fun, all!
posted by Kat Allison at 1:09 PM

---------------------------

Ah too bad Kat Allison! Yes, let's definitely plan another meetup for sooner than later. One thought I just had was holding a book/puzzle/board game swap. I'll bring a copy of Codenames Duet this afternoon in case anyone is up for it! Planning on arriving between 3:10-3:35pm, depending on which bus I catch.

Some of us are here and under cover on the patio. I'm wearing a purple fleece and a puffy vest.

I have arrived and claimed a table outside under the tent. Short dark hair and wearing a red jacket.

Just so I don't forget - spamandkimchi proposed doing a puzzle, book, and movie swap for the next one. Probably in May?
posted by fiercekitten at 12:07 PM

---------------------------

Yes, rebent! I made noises about organizing the next meetup in 2 months. Since Sunday afternoon seems like it was overall a good time for people, maybe Sun May 19th, 3-6pm, location TBD? If we wanted to go for a book & game swap and people were up for a MAX ride/car pool to downtown Hillsboro, Rune & Board might be willing to host us.
