The phone is hooked in to the house phone wiring via a regular phone
jack in the living room. Then in my office, I have an raspberry pi
with a switchpi board running asterisk, going into a local loop
current booster / ring booster and then also into the house phone
wiring. At the phone box outside, I wired up the house lines such
that they all get the feed from the office, and that's that.
I'm continually messing with my asterisk config, so there may be
times that the extension is unavailable (eg, when I messed something
up) - but I try and keep it in a working state most of the time ;)
