Trump Tries to Keep Focus on Trade as Impeachment Trial Moves Forward

Steve Herman

DAVOS, SWITZERLAND - With the distraction of his impeachment trial back
home, U.S. President Donald Trump tried to keep the focus on trade
matters and highlighting the domestic economy at a hastily arranged
news conference just before he departed the World Economic Forum in
   Davos, Switzerland.

At the start of Wednesday's briefing for White House traveling media in
the Swiss Alps, Trump brought to the podium World Trade Organization
Director-General Roberto Azevedo to highlight his push for reform of
   global trade rules.
"The World Trade Organization has been very unfair to the United States
for many, many years," declared Trump.

WTO officials will visit Washington in the next week or two to discuss
with U.S. officials what Trump called drastic reform for the
   organization.

"It has to be updated. It has to be changed. It has to be reformed,"
agreed Azevedo. "The system has not been functioning properly in many
areas. That's something that we're trying to address."
