US Captures IS Operative in Iraq

   by Carla Babb

U.S. Special Operations forces have captured a suspected Islamic State
operative in Iraq, U.S. defense officials said.

According to officials, Americans are interrogating the detainee, who
is expected to be turned over to Iraqi officials in the coming days.

The suspect was captured by a U.S. specialized expeditionary targeting
force that was sent to Iraq and Syria to target high ranking IS
   leaders.

   Target force
The targeting force in Iraq was formed following a successful raid last
year in which a U.S. Delta force crossed into Syria and killed IS
commander Abu Sayyaf. The commander's wife, Umm Sayyaf, was captured
   during the raid.

Umm Sayyaf's interrogation provided the U.S. with valuable information,
according to officials. She was eventually turned over to Iraqi
   authorities.

Last month, the U.S. Justice Department charged her for her alleged
role in last year's death of American aid worker Kayla Mueller. Umm
Sayyaf and her late husband are accused of holding Mueller and other
   women captive in their home.

U.S. officials say Mueller was subjected to repeated sexual abuse by IS
chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi during her captivity.

Mueller was killed in February 2015.
