Obama to Discuss Islamic State With NATO Chief

   by VOA News

U.S. President Barack Obama is hosting NATO Secretary General Jens
Stoltenberg at the White House, with the so-called Islamic State
extremist group expected to be high on the agenda.

A White House statement says Obama will "reiterate the United States
stands together with NATO in the wake of the horrific terrorist
attacks" carried out last month in Brussels, Belgium.

The two leaders will also discuss "the progress Allies are making in
the international effort to degrade and destroy ISIL," the statement
added, using an alternative name for the Sunni Muslim extremist group.

Other topics are expected to include the migrant and refugee crisis
facing Europe, NATO's response to Russia's involvement in Ukraine, and
preparations for then July 2016 NATO Summit that is being held in
   Poland.

The White House said the visit "underscores the importance the United
States places on the transatlantic bond that NATO embodies" and is
committed to ensuring the alliance "continues to uphold international
   order."

The visit comes as Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump
continues to question continued U.S. involvement in NATO. Last week,
the billionaire businessman called the organization "obsolete" and said
he would be fine if it broke up.

The [1]North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed in 1949, partly as
a response to the military threat posed by what was then the Soviet
   Union.
