Shooting Erupts at Army Base in South Sudan Capital

Fighting has erupted at the South Sudan army barracks where the
country`s ongoing conflict began in mid-December.
Army officials say that clashes broke out around 9 a.m. Wednesday at
the Giada Barracks on the outskirts of the capital, Juba.
The government says the fighting stemmed from a dispute over salary
   payments.
Gunfire could still be heard by late afternoon, Juba time, despite
government statements that the situation was under control. Officials
have declined to say whether anyone was wounded or killed in the
   fighting.
Giada is where members of the presidential guard clashed the night of
December 15. The fighting set off weeks of political and ethnic
violence across South Sudan that left thousands dead and forced
hundreds of thousands from their homes.
The government and rebel forces signed a cease-fire in Ethiopia in
   January but clashes have continued.
The unrest has led to a cut in South Sudan`s oil production, which
could affect the government`s ability to pay soldiers.
Fears of renewed violence in the capital Wednesday prompted many shops
to close early. Soldiers have been deployed along the city`s main
   roads.
