Islamabad Protesters Try Storming PM's House

   by VOA News

Dozens of people have been injured in clashes between police and
opposition protesters in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad.

The clashes broke out Saturday when protesters who have been camped
outside parliament for two weeks tried to storm the home of Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif, using cranes to remove barricades. Police
responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

The protesters are led by cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan and
firebrand cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri. They have alleged massive fraud in the
May 2013 election that saw Sharif sweep to power with a huge majority.

International observers have said the vote was largely free and fair.

Sharif again said Saturday that he will not resign. He has tried to
resolve the political impasse through several rounds of negotiations
with the opposition leaders, but they have failed.

Several police are reported among those injured on Saturday.

Some information for this report comes from AP, Reuters.
