Reporter Shot After Fleeing Unrest in South Sudan A reporter who lives in South Sudan has described a harrowing experience that took place after violence prompted him to flee into the nearby bush. Manyang David Mayar told VOA Friday that he wound up being shot as he and his family returned to their hometown of Bor on Thursday. Mayar says he was accidentally shot by government troops who appeared to be drunk. "One of the bullets that was shot up, and it landed on my upper arm. It passed through my flesh and the bullet went out." Mayer received treatment for his wound at a United Nations compound in Bor. He says his family went into hiding last week after fighting broke out in the region. Earlier this month, renegade soldiers briefly seized control of Bor, the capital of Jonglei state. Mayar said thousands of people fled to the bush, where many had to survive without basic humanitarian assistance. "There were thousands, thousands of women, children and men leaving their homes to the bush. On the day they were leaving, some two women gave birth to very young babies in the bush, there. And, they were accommodated by men, not midwives." Mayar says that he returned to a heavily damaged town. "We got back. Everything was destroyed. Big buildings were closed. The market was looted completely. And now, there is no market completely. Maybe you have money - there is no market that you can buy anything from." Mayar also says he saw bodies in the street. "I can still see the bodies of people killed, some civilians and some policemen." The unrest erupted in South Sudan earlier this month after President Salva Kiir accused his former deputy, Riek Machar, of attempting a coup. Machar said the violence was a result of a purge of Mr. Kiir`s political rivals. The violence quickly took on ethnic dimensions, with members of President Kiir`s Dinka ethnic group fighting the Nuer group to which Machar belongs. __________________________________________________________________ [1]http://www.voanews.com/content/reporter-shot-after-fleeing-unrest-in -south-sudan/1818912.html References 1. http://www.voanews.com/content/reporter-shot-after-fleeing-unrest-in-south-sudan/1818912.html
